This looks so damn sick.

Essentially, it is a tech demo of the source engine (the one that powers Half-Life 2), but maxing out the graphics in every possible area. The map itself has twice the polygon count of a normal HL2 level, and the textures are super hi-res.

It also introduces HDR lighting (basically iris control, allowing the brightness of the game to change dynamically), which means when you walk outside into the bright sunlight from a dark indoor area, it takes several seconds for your "eyes" to adjust to the new light. It also maps reflections in real time to weapons, textures, and basically any model ingame.

Basically, it puts the XBOX 360 and PS3 to shame.

Here's the catch. Minimum requirements are a 3ghz cpu, 1 gig+ of ram, and a GeForce 6800/Radeon X800 series video card.

This is cool because it brings photo-realistic gaming ever closer.

It's not a full game, just a one level tech-demo designed to show off what the engine can do.

Day of Defeat Source, which comes out monday along with Lost Coast, has HDR lighting, and that's online.

sooooo if i bought HL2 will i have to buy this? if so, thats retarted, you should be able to DL it off steam. even so, its not like my comp can handle that or anything.....:p

I have a 2.6 P4 with 512mb ram (laptop) and my computer destroyed HL2, so I should be alright I think.

I like those shots alot there Ross, but to say it blows away XBox360 and PS3 away is a bit much, with the consoles still not fully released yet and every Game Show showcasing games, that could be real time, could be rendered its hard to say at this point. Also console game makers are still only starting to work out the kinks with the new hardware theyre being given. Look at the PS2. When Tekken Tag Tournament came out I was like in shock cause it was such a huge jump from PS1 or N64. But compare T.T.T. to say....Gran Turismo 4 or Soul CaliburIII when it comes out, theres a huge differene. So while I think that the Half demo screens there are really cool, I dont think saying that they blow PS3 or XBox360 is appropriate. Also, they really dont come off as that photorelistic to me. The background do, but the guns and the buildings just look a little sketchy compared to other games, Ive played current gen.
 
^Watch the new Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer! That's in-game..it's crazy. Looks just as good as that Lost Coast shit.
