You're right. I'm sure if they were going to kill this guy they would do it in a way so that no one would even know he existed in the first place, but perhaps at first they weren't entirely sure as to what information he had actually obtained. So by the time word got out of what he found (if there is even any truth to it) it would have look awfully suspicious if he just "died" one day.
And on another note, in that interview with his mother, didn't she mention something about him not being able to lie to to whatever disease he has that made him obsess over things? I couldnt understand what she was saying at that part.
