i have a martin acoustic made in the 1870's that i inherited from my great grandma, in doing some research i found all martins made before, the 30's or something were made for gut strings only.
beings as this guitar has been through hell already, i ordered some gut strings, and they were pricy haha.
soo does anybody have actual experience with gut strings?

this is right after we pulled it out.it's cleaned up all nice now, way better looking some dumbass added the tailpiece at some point =/

I apologize good sir, but I believe the aformentioned brand of strings, Elixer, also makes steel coated nylon strings, in addition to the steel electric guitar strings I recommended, I imagine steel coated nylon strings would work splendidly with that guitar, as they do with most other classicals. At some point in the future I hope to acquire a cheap nylon guitar such as that one, for the purpose of learning flamenco on.

To OP, So uh, are you saying that it won't take regular steel coated nylon strings and you have to buy special gut ones? You might be able to use the bottom three strings from a very large gauge pack of strings as the top three, and then the bottom three strings from a normal gauge pack of strings as the bottom three, and then none of the strings would be steel wrapped, and nylon won't hurt the guitar.

my friend has the same gut strings; aquila's. His guitar plays really sweet and he says he wouldn't go back to nylon. But i myself am too much of a guitar noob to compare it with my guitar, i play on a cheap second hand alhambra with nylon d'addario strings and i am just fine...
(my friend payd around 20euro for the strings...)
