Gus kenworthy goes to team Britain

I could care less about the Olympics. They used to be a beautiful thing, but the IOC ran it into the ground. It's just an advertisement circle jerk featuring Liz Swaney type characters who just want to be on TV so they can show their grandma or something. Gus Kenworthy used to be a fucking sick skier, but now he's more of a gay public figure than a park skier. I hope the best for him, but I don't think he is going to do well in a major comp ever again.

It will be great to see him there and compete without taking up a slot for the US. He's always had one of the cleanest styles out there
 
Don’t wanna be that guy but go look at his ig. He isnt a skier anymore. He only posted 3 ski clips this whole year and 90% of his ski content from the year prior is him naked. Idgaf if you’re gay, straight, bisexual, or Blandz, theres no reason to have that many naked ski pics. Like seriously what is that shit if you go back to July 2017 theres so many naked pics and its like what even is the point of this it just trips me out tbh. Im not homophobic in any way, shape, or form, but hes playing the gay card way too hard.

But anyways my whole point is: To me he just seems like a clout chaser playing the gay card and the olympics is his last clout chase that involves skiing cause he clearly doesnt care about it at this point. Which is fine but still super unnecessary and weird.

And I doubt his mom gives a shit what country he’s reppin either. Like as a parent id just be proud that my son is even in the olympics who in the flying fuck would care what country he’s going for. He did it cause he wanted an easy in. Before you tell me hes not a clout chaser lets not forget his photoshopped pipe pic.

What do you mean "used to be"? Qualifying for the Olympics has been the same for decades, "liz swaney" happens in every Olympic sport. The Olympics will never be a premiere slopestyle/halfpipe/big air event because of the way you qualify for the Olympics. Its a great show of the sport for the masses and it certainly bring more people into skiing, but the overall effects have been rippling through the ski industry since 2013.
 
I used to think of Gus Kenworthy as one of the greats, but this was years ago and now anything i see of him is Public Figure related. I can't even remember the last time i saw recent content of him skiing, and when i do its a replay of a comp run. He seems to be thoroughly enjoying the life he's created for himself and that's all that matters, but in my opinion him moving to Great Britain's team opens up a spot for someone that enjoys skiing more than the idea of being an athlete.

Can you elaborate? AFAIK, Olympic freestyle skiing looks pretty identical to the X Games or Dew Tour competitions, so idk what you mean by "circle jerk featuring Liz Swaney type characters"
 
It really bums me out that he can't represent USA but imo he has a valid reason for doing so, he was born in the UK and he wants to represent his mother's heritage.

It's kinda annoying that he doesn't really rep freestyle skiing publicly and he's kinda just become a gay pop culture icon at this point, but doesn't he still compete and stuff? It's whatever...

He seems like a chill and cool guy in person, but I just checked his Insta and it's REALLY gay lmaoooo

People move on, happens in skateboarding and snowboarding all the time. When you've been risking your body for that long, I can understand if he wants to step away and focus on something else. Yea, I'm bummed too we haven't seen his smooth style of skiing in a while, but all good; I hit the unfollow button a while ago and kept it moving. Some of you guys are acting like he pissed in your bowl of cereal.

Now, whether he's seriously making a run for this or not, I'm interested to see how it unfolds...

I've got no problem with Gus switching teams (pun definitely intended).

Frees up a spot for a new US up and comer and I'd rather see a Gus slopestyle run than whatever rando would have gotten that spot.

He's super cringey but still undeniably rips (both buttholes and on skis).

Cause you can’t switch in most sports at that level. Would make free skiing look bad if they allow it.
 
From the perspective of a uk skier, I’m stoked for this. Gus is arguably skiings biggest ‘celebrity’ after coming out as he did / his medal and the puppies at sochi. If more British people see him skiing and get into it as a result (which hopefully leads to more demand -> more investment in facilities etc) then I’m all for it
 
Seems like a silly point but surely its because he wouldn't make the US ski team for this Olympics?? There's so much young talent coming through out there and as everyone else has said he hardly skis anymore!!

I doubt he gives a shit about whether his Mom is British or not its a free pass for him to the games which I don't think he'd get if he tried to qualify in the US

Huge kick in the teeth for the younger British athletes who are struggling for funding to get into the alps and improve when Gus comes along and takes the spot for someone that could potentially make a career out of it for themselves. Funding that could be better spent elsewhere is going to someone that has appeared on Ru Paul’s Drag race and is probably already making a fair bit of $$$$
 
Younger athletes like myself needing funding to further improve our skiing and this happens... a bit of a kick in the teeth when he’s only going to continue to train privately. Won’t even seem like there’s a proper addition to the team

Yeah I was wondering about this, how much funding is from GB vs getting it from sponsors? Like does woodsy get most of his qualifying contest trips / training paid for by Salomon / monster etc do you know?

yep tons of British talent, how is whats his faces behind the comp scenes going? making a career of it? luckily the British dont take pride in their teeth. tell gus he has enough gay money to not take all that lucrative British ski career loot. im sure you have a solid perspective on the situation. my heart goes out to all the legit British free skiing careers cut short by this.

Nah nw, just remember a bunch of athletes at Sochi who got pissed that they couldn’t display their sponsors on their skis / helmets despite the sponsors being the ones providing most of their funding to travel to contests
