Despite Greece being the birthplace of modern civilization, they are currently the downfall of modern times. It's sad watching a country with such a rich culture and beautiful landscapes going down so hard.
They were living way over their means, they basically dug their own grave and now they have to lay in it.
I have family in Greece and pretty much every single one of them works for the government. Most of them work at the University of Athens while others are in the military, this makes them prone to poverty as the all banks are going bankrupt.
Anyways I won't explain the whole financial crisis as it will take too long and is pretty complex. I you want more details, go one some news website.
We need to count ourselves as being very fortunate to live in countries where our economy is nowhere near as bad (yet).
