yeh, um half the bands some of you picked aren't metal, 80's hair bands aren't metal, zeppelin isn't metal... but the obvious answer is metallica, whether you're a fan or not.

slayer, pantera and metallica were never, and still aren't, hair bands... because you obvisouly don't know, an 80's hair band is Twisted Sister, Rat, Poison, White Snake... etc. etc... i never said slayer and pantera weren't metal

For 'pure' metal, I'd have to say Iced Earth.

Other metal(ish) bands I'd vote for: Scepultura, Slayer, Danzig, Rhapsody, Tristania, Theatre of Tragedy, Lacrimosa, Em Sinfonia, Cradle of Filth, Children of Bodom, Ammon Amarth, Sonata Arctica, old Savatage.

Zepplin is the best band ever IMO and they were largely responsible for the development of early metal bands like Metallica, Megadeth, etc. However, they are NOT metal by any means. Just wanted to clear that up.

It was called 80's hair metal and yes bands like WASP and Motley Crue are metal.

I think we need to break this into categories like death metal, hair metal, power metal, epic metal, etc.
