Graphic Design

yes i am but if you don't figure out a way to make yourself more useful then there's a good chance you wont make it that far. i would suggest minoring in marketing (what i'm doing) because you need to think of yourself as a brand and learn how to market yourself.your products. nowadays everyone and their mother think they can go to school for Graphic Design, you gotta make yourself stand out.

if you feel like you can run a business, and that your outerwear has something different than every other of its type it's worth a shot. don't expect it to be immediate success especially if you try designing things that are unoriginal and played out, then it's basically game over

In the last few years multiple companies like mystery ranch backpacks, phar north apparel, and twenty six pedals have sprung out of a relatively small community. I realize there is a lot of competition in this field, but isn't there competition with everything? I was looking for someone's input who is trying their luck in the business.

and why do you think they did well? because of a good graphic designer? no, while that helps, the reason they succeeded is because they knew how to market. i didn't say competition would hinder you, but it will. it's not competition that fucks young companies, it's just being flat out dumb and not knowing how to target a demographic or market your own products.

Gaining experience in graphic design provides the tools needed to stand out and appeal to potential demographics. It doesn't matter if it is local, the internet has enabled business in all forms. Building web pages, and attracting attention from other parts of the world is a definite possibility. Minoring in something business related would not be a bad idea, but couldn't partnering with a business major be just as good?

Alright i'm not sure why you're bring localities into this as i never mentioned anything about whether it was a local or global business, obviously either is viable option to start. And same thing with the web pages, i never mentioned that either. i thought you wanted to start an outerwear apparel business? i assumed that meant you wanted to design and advertise your products/company yourself, whether or not you want to build and design your website is up to you, but it will require a third set of coding skills you won't learn in a Graphic Design program anywhere, meaning you'll have to self learn or hire a company for it. if you want to work with a partner and you find someone who is down to start from the ground up then yeah that is the ideal situation for that scenario, i was speaking in terms of you opening up a business by yourself.

I'll be majoring in graphic design. I can tell you from experience working with a cut and see manufacturer that graphic design won't help much. Maybe major in product design with a focus in apparel if you want to do that sort of thing. I learned by my cousin who is a fashion designer for reebok and Disney teaching me

and giving me -k for trying to offer you advice is a bit contradictory, but it's whatever. i work in the field you want to work in, i obviously can answer your questions with answers from experience but in all honesty if you got offended by anything i said you wont last a day in this industry

Also to add on to what I said. If you major in graphic design you will most likely get a working knowledge of illustrator which is necessary since that's the program most tech packs are made in and it allows you to easily break down your artwork into printable format, but it won't give you enough knowledge on garmet construction to be able to produce outerwear

I always wanted to be a graphic designer, but I feel like I baaaarely fall short in the creativity that it requires to have a future in it.

no worries man, i was just trying to be real with you because a lot of people have this warped view on this field and think it's so easy, but the reality is very very far from that assumption. anyway, good luck with whatever you pursue and if you ever have any questions feel free to shoot me a PM!
