Hey newschoolers, I know the majority of you are either broke like myself, twelve, or dont give a shit about surfing but a local business from they York Maine area is raising money for an awesome project. I was lucky enough to take a class and build a surfboard with Grain and it was one of the best experiences of my life.

Please check out the project and if you can donate anything. share it if you feel like it, tweeter that shit, tell your grandma, show your pet armadillo

They're sick, always wanted to try on of their boards. How does a wood board ride? I've heard wood boards just plow through everything.

dude that is so awesome. I've always wanted to build my own board and always was always thinking about shorter boards (even if wood). But now that I think about it I might want to build a wood longboard. I've never ridden a longboard but I could ride it into old age kind of thing and it would look a lot better than my dirty shortboard as a livingroom centerpiece.

now I have a potential summer project

I built the waterlog, which is 10' and a total beast. The waterlogs catch everything and cut through chop and heavy winds. If you have questions about the class be sure to ask. Check out Grains website and if youre ever in the area stop by their shop, its one of my favorite places to be. They have boards in the shop you can demo but if anyones on the new hampshire coast and wants to give by board a try just give me a pm.

yeah it looks cool. unfortunately way out of my price range. I'm sure they will appeal more to the older crowd though.

I think for myself I would like to do it as a totally DIY thing. Read up about it on google and then just giver.

I've shaped two normal foam boards already, 1 eps and 1 pu. It's not hard to turn out a surfable product, but to make a masterpiece is much harder. I like to say mine is the dimensions intended within experimental error. People do wood boards on their own too. But these guys are masters of that craft. You can buy kits from them as far as I know.

I think longboarding and noseriding are super cool, but I've never owned a board longer than 6'4" at the moment. If I lived up their I'd probably have made one by now.

but with wood you could draw up templates to make sure it is very symmetric and stuff right? As long as you knew what shape you wanted I don't see why it would be that difficult to get right. Finding that shape would certainly be tough, especially for a type of board you've never ridden.

Yeah I suppose you could. I mean, you could cut in duplicate so your pieces are symmetric. Wood boards are usually chambered with internal ribs supporting the outer deck structure as far as I know. A bunch of arches holding up the top, attached to the bottom. There's like infinite ways to build them, many ways to do the rails. But of course, there's better ways than others. Look around swaylocks or grain's site, they have pictures.
