Gotta Choose A Fat Ski...

Alright guys, I want to get a fat ski for next season, and I was deadset on the Bacons until recently, I think that I should wait until next year when some of the hype dies down and I can actually hear a real review on how they ski. So that got me thinking about what other fat skis I could get for this season, and I thought about the Made'n(189), the JP vs. Julien, the ANT, and a couple others. So I wanna know who has ridden these or other fat skis and can tell me which ones they like best and why, I want something light that can hold it's own everywhere, it'll be mostly for BC booters and just skiing around in fresh, and I want something pretty soft, cause I'm around 6'4" and only like 160lbs. So any skis you guys would suggest I wanna hear it, thanks.
 
Just thought I'd add that a lot of people like the Atomic daddys. They are light and supposively very stiff. I think the teledaddy might be softer. I have been on line mothership titaniums for the last couple of years and they are amazing and light. They stopped making them, but the prophet 100 and 130 look great too.
 
Yeah, I've pretty much narrowed it down to the Made'n and the JP vs. Julien after reading various threads about the two. But that brings up another couple questions, how soft are both of these skis, I don't want them to be so soft that that can't hold a decent edge in conditions other than fresh pow, also which is more versatile, cause the Jp vs. Juliens have almost no sidecut, and I want something that'll turn and can be skied other places than ONLY the backcountry. And which is lighter, but I'm 99.9% sure the Jp vs. Julien is the lighter of the two. Anybody ever ridden both?
 
Both skis are soft.

The Made'n will be much more versatile. The JP as you said has very little sdecut. It is a sick BC ski, not a great everyday ski.

JP is lighter

Between these 2, get the Made'n.

Honestly....there are better skis out there. IMO the gotama is better then both those skis. Maybe consider ANTs too.
 
I thought about the ANT, but it's quite a bit stiffer than the other two and I'm most likely not going to be doing the kind of skiing those are built for. I'm thinking the Made'n is what I'll go with, did they change them for this season at all, or could I save money by buying last years model and get the same ski?
 
Have you thought about this years ANT, apperently they softened it up a bit. that could be the ticket for you.

Plus for as fat ski they are way light.
 
I dunno, I thought about all the Armadas, I looked at the ARV for a long while, but I really want something with a 100+ waist. But I just read a review that said the Made'n is SUPER heavy, is that true? Cause like I said, I'm light, and I don't want a ski that's too heavy for me that I have to muscle through every turn and have trouble spinning with. Thoughts?
 
189 Made'n is pretty heavy.

You could ski the JP everyday, just need to adjust a bit.

If that is the case, man up and get ANTs. Still light and fucking rock. You need to be ready to ski them though

And how heavy are we talking here, I remember checking out the Made'n very briefly in a shop, but I'm pretty sure it was the 179 and I didn't pay much attention to the weight cause I wasn't really considering buying any. And I would check out the ANT more, but it's really stiff, and even though I could ski it, I don't enjoy skiing super stiff skis as much as a softer stick, I find them to be more forgiving poppier, and just all around more fun.
 
adjust meaning change the way you skiing groomers and such. those skis just dont carve like the made'ns would.

and 189 made'ns are pretty heavy IMO. if weight is an issue get the JPs
 
heavy as in the ANTs are much much lighter. it's insane how that big of a ski can be that lightweight.

i'd choose 190 gotamas/190 VCTs/190 EHPs or 191 ANTs over 189 madens any day of the week. personally i'm not too big of a fan of the madens.
 
Well, it's not like number one on the list...but I don't want something that's so heavy it'll hinder my skiing, I want to be able to jump, and spin, Etc.
 
I doubt they made it softer. Anthony Boronowski was complaining of how soft the "store" version was than how he had made them and his skis were much stiffer.
 
they said they did make it softer, but from those who ahve skied both the difference is not really noticable.
 
Yeah, even if it is softer I doubt it's what I want, I want just a toy/fun ski, big enough to float in the fresh stuff, not too heavy, around the mid-soft flex area, and can do some tree skiing. That's one reason I didn't like the JP vs. Julien, it's really slow edge to edge and for trees thats not a fun attribute. By the way, how's the ON3P thing going? Any been made, any plans to start selling them?
 
I was debating this same sort of issue and decided to go with the ANTs. They are not NEARLY as stiff as they are played up to be, downright soft compared to the Supermojos. They are very managable, and not that heavy. They suck for moguls and seem to ski better switch than forward on groomers, but everything else rules.
 
I'm starting to think the Bacons might actually be the ski I want, they're super easy to carve with like the lizzies, and are soft...I dunno. Fuck I hate having to choose between skis, I want one of each.
 
bamboo is a possible ave. in the future.

Maple/Aspen cores will be used for the up coming season.
 
^ Actutally I hadn't considered the P4, but it looks like a definite option, anyone ridden them, pros and cons, flex, weight...?
 
The first few years Scott had what looks like some durability issues with there skis such as snaped skis doing rails, cracks & poor base material. Could and Should be solved by now tho. But that was the same with various other companies such as Force, Amarda, ... (don't want to start a fight so dont bother telling me that your scotts, forces are fine after 3 seasons of abuse) I am only airing on the side of caution with scott. There are better skis out ther.
 
OK, sorry to bump this again, but it's between the JP vs. Julien and the Made'n...I'm pretty sure I'm a good enough skier to make either one turn/carve pretty well, so I just have to know this...is the Made'n really as heavy as I'm being led to believe, and which one is softer?
 
I still think you should buy my ARVs since they are a great fun soft ski with better sidecut than both those skis ;)

And yes, ON3P... iggy is making history :)
 
The JP is not a fun everyday ski. It is fun in fresh snow and that is it. I skied it on a bunch of pow days last spring and they were ill but I wanted something totally different by noon. The 189 Maidens are too heavy to spin but definiteyl outperform the Jps all mountain and handle varying snow quality a bit better.

Having skied a substantial ammount on most of the skis in theis category these are my recommendations for skis way better than the two you've narrowed it down to.

1. 190 4FRNT EHP, same as the 190 VCT last year, as light as the JPs but WAY more ski.

2. 190 Gotamas, a bit stiffer/heavier than the 4frnts but still lighter than 189 maidens imo, more power than the rest of the skis, plus they are a sick white this year.

3. 188 Salomon 1080 Guns, believe it or not this is a good ski and has most of the characteristics you are looking for, 101mm waist, light, fairly long, twinned, deeper sidecut than most big skis, this may be perfect for you.

4. 186 Prophet 100, a bit shorter but easily as stable as the 190 gots with the metal matrix, stiffer than some but not at all too stiff, great all mountain performance and wide enough to float for you, at $599 map they are the best price too.

Maidens are hella old and way heavy, Jps are a total one trick pony with no power for the crud. Open your mind and see that there are way better choices for what you seek.
 
What exactly does "Way more ski" mean? Stiffer? And what about the Atomic line-up of fat twins, are they worth looking at?...and I don't think I want the Gun Lab, just cause it's foam, I dunno....I never really liked Salomon skis that much.
 
I got a pair of this coming season's Line Prophet 130. Unmounted......perfect. Hit me up. These are the ultimate powder ski.
 
Also...is the Got a true twin, cause I know some years it has been twinned and some it hasn't...I want to be able to land and ride switch with my skis.
 
prophet= worst choice out of all the skis listed.

you should buy the kingswoods iggyskier has for sale. that's what you need.
 
Well....if he is serious about BC, he wants the prophets. These skis are not to be used anywhere else. I use them in the BC, and they kick the shit out of anything. SUV, runs though anything and everything. Plus i love how light they are.
 
Doesn't Josh Bryant ride all over with them...like park and pipe and shit...I dunno...they might be pretty versatile. Those Kingswoods look dope too, but I dunno if I can afford what he wants for them...cause I wouldn't lowball on a pair of skis that caliber.
 
Sounds like the gotamas would be the perfect ski for you. They're super fun to ride and you can use them in just about any condition. My opinion on the Made'ns is that they are ridiculously soft and should only be used either if you're tiny or a weiner. But yeah, definitely go with the gotamas; good sidecut, good weight, good flex, what else can you ask for?
