Got laid off... :(

Crappy day. I called into work to see if there were any hours to ask if I could make sure to have some next week or something. Girl who does my department's hours says, sure, I'll look into it. My manager calls me about an hour later, says, hey, we don't have any hours now that it's after the holidays, so that's why you haven't been scheduled," and I'm thinking, okay, well, that's cool, as long as I didn't do something and you guys are just punishing me with no hours, and then he says, so we're laying you off. I say, "are you joking?" And he's like, "NO! (in a nasty tone) We just don't have any hours." And me, shocked and upset, I ask why these other two girls, one who's totally ineffectual by my department head's standards and a few of the other employees, have 35 and 30 hours a piece. He tells me that's his decision. I say, okay, and I'm going to pick up my check tomorrow. :( Had I known they hired me in August to be sesasonal, I would have tagged on a second job.
 
I think there are laws against that... wrongful dimissal? If it's a seasonal position, then they could be justified. But if you were hired and passed a probation period, then I think they have to give you notice.

You might want to check up on that.
 
Getting fired without a legitimate reason is wrongful dismissal. If they are to lay someone off because of a lack of hours, they should pull you aside.

I don't know what the labour laws are in the US, but it might be worth while investigating if you feel that you were booted for the wrong reasons.
 
I worked at Sport Chalet. It just really sucks because I was hired in August, and they didn't say anything about it being "seasonal" or I wouldn't be kept after Christmas. It was very very shitty because there were several girls hired after me that are being kept who are worthless.
 
it's no offense to you at all but more than likely the manager isnt married and is hoping to get some action by the worthless girls he hired after you.

eh, if I were you I'd go talk to upper management. Make sure you have a legit case though when you go talk to them, otherwise they'll support your manager's decision to lay you off.

I wouldn't doubt it - about three or four weeks ago when I said something about getting a christmas present for my boyfriend he said, boyfriend? If we had known you had a boyfriend we wouldn't have hired you... (jokingly right?)

Fuck Sport Chalet man, the guys in the ski/snowboard department were total douche nozzles who got all sketched out that I understood the dynamics of a screw driver and could wax my own skis.

But it's quite possible I have a decent case, but I think I'd be better off working somewhere else anyway.

eh go seek compensation for wrongful dismissal and then bring sexual harassment charges for his comment about 'we wouldn't have hired you if we had known you had a boyfriend'
