Good spots to live north lake

So i'm transferring into SNC in the fall, but i'm a bit old to be living in dorms.

Just looking for affordable areas to find a spot to live, have a car so a moderate commute isn't really an issue. I was looking at just getting a place in Incline Village or in Carson City. My main question is, how bad/impassable do the roads on the east side of the lake get? Reno would be sick, but the commute looks like it could be a bit of a bitch in the winter.

thanks for any help.

I go to SNC myself, you can live in the Racket Club which is a 3 minute walk from the school. Also there are a ton of condo on Ski way on the way to Diamond Peak, and up Country Club.

I didn't really read your thread. Rose can be hairy when it snows. Carson pass isn't as high in elevation, and its not really as winding as Rose is. I feel like commuting from Carson is gonna be a pain in the ass. Its about 20 - 30 minutes from campus, Reno is 30 minutes to an hour

much appreciated, i'll probably end up getting a place in incline village, might leave the car here. i've got a little while to figure it out.

im on my 4th/senior year at snc. I lived in the dorms my first year. You definately dont want to be involved in the dorm life unless you're fresh out of high school.
I work at diamond peak on ski patrol and I know people who make the commute from reno and carson and they hate it. others who dont mind a daily 30-45 minute drive say it is the only way to go. in snow the drive is pretty brutal because of the california drivers.
personally the gas plus time is not worth the money you would save on rent. unless you like a bigger city lifestyle i would recommend staying in incline or kings beach buuuut they are very small towns, some people dont like knowing everybody everywhere.
you can find a decent/affordable place only if you room with two or more people. it's easy to do, everybody looking for a roommate here is either a local relaxed ski bum or goes to SNC.
hit me up if you need any more info or finally move here. i'm graduating in may but i'm staying here for the summer

again, really appreciate the info.

i'm leaning towards living in incline village, just wanted to check my options and see what was up.

i'll definitely be in touch, i may need some assistance in finding room-mates.

Live in Incline or KB. You are coming out here to SNC to live in Tahoe, why live on the other side of the mountain 40 minutes away? Unless you are going to UNR, TMCC, WNCC, or have a job down there, then it makes sense living in the valley. Driving over Rose can be a pain since its the highest year-round sierra pass, so it gets a little snow. I lived in the dorms at SNC for two years, it wasn't that bad, although 2nd year I had a single. There should be enough off-campus housing where you could find a place.
