Fear mongering? Obama? Dude, Obama doesn't do any fear mongering, he just tells it like it is, then presents solutions to the problem in an optimistic style. If you want fear mongering, look no farther than the last 8 years, when we were constantly being told that only Bush could keep us safe; now that is fear mongering.
As far as the stimulus goes, it gives us some money, sure, but its main point is to spend money in various ways. The businesses hired to do government jobs will then be able to use that money to hire new employees, thus creating jobs. This worked before in FDR's New Deal, and with any luck, the bill will be big enough to do the same 75 years later.
 
a presidents job is to SERVE the people, not have them collectively suck his dick while they kneel before him. thats the job of a dictator. Fearmongering would be the only way to pass a bill which nobody read, that in essence signed away all the money you will earn for the rest of your life because you'll be paying it back.

i'm not supporting the patriot act either, or most of the other bills proposed to congress by bush, or clinton. however, 800b of our money affects everyone much more directly than being able to tap our phones without a warrant.

In the Micheal Moore clip that was just posted one of the Democratic Representatives said that the P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act was full of the all sorts of things that Republicans had been wanting to do for the past 10 years and that they exploited the crisis of 9/11 to get it passed. That's all this "stimulus" bill is (I think it's oxymoranic that it's called a stimulus bill, because all it does is borrow more money to spend, it doesn't grow our economy, it just makes our nation more indebted), the democrats have been sitting on the sidelines for the last 8 years waiting to do all of these things, this bill is their chance.

Like Rahm Emanuel said "you don't just waste a good crisis" meaning that they should pass all of the programs they want now under the guise of fixing a "crisis" so none of it will come under scrutiny.

I stopped trusting anything America's power elite (corparate and government) say years ago because all they do is lie to gain more money and power.

If the exact same bill would have been passed by the Bush administration, the right wing would accept it and declare it the best solution while the liberals would strike it down. C'mon people, calm down. Obama is trying to do it right. Its not his fault if that bill was 11000pages, its whats needed to help the ecomony.

hahaha i love how you kids are so surprised to learn that senators dont read the bills hteyre voting on. they dont even vote! everything gets arranged before bills are open to the floor out of fear of philibustering and non germane floor holdings. people work out deals with cost-benefits to each consituency and then they tell the senators how to vote.

Pay for it at a lower interest rate than the Fed is paying China for the money? You have to remember the Federal Gov doesnt have this money they are borrowing it to. China now own what percent of us... After this is all done its going to be an awful lot.
 
The most eye-opening civics lesson I ever had was while teaching third grade this year. The presidential election was heating up and some of the children showed an interest. I decided we would have an election for a class president. We would choose our nominees. They would make a campaign speech and the class would vote.

To simplify the process, candidates were nominated by other class members. We discussed what kinds of characteristics these students should have. We got many nominations and from those, Jamie and Olivia were picked to run for the top spot.

The class had done a great job in their selections. Both candidates were good kids. I thought Jamie might have an advantage because he got lots of parental support. I had never seen Olivia's mother.

The day arrived when they were to make their speeches, Jamie went first. He had specific ideas about how to make our class a better place. He ended by promising to do his very best. Every one applauded. He sat down and Olivia came to the podium.

Her speech was concise. She said, "If you will vote for me, I will give you ice cream." She sat down. The class went wild. "Yes! Yes! We want ice cream."

She surely would say more. She did not have to. A discussion followed. How did she plan to pay for the ice cream? She wasn't sure. Would her parents buy it or would the class pay for it. She didn't know. The class really didn't care. All they were thinking about was ice cream.

Jamie was forgotten. Olivia won by a land slide.

Every time Barack Obama opened his mouth he offered ice cream and fifty-two percent of the people reacted like nine year olds. They want ice cream. The other forty-eight percent know they're going to have to feed the cow and clean up the mess.

I just read this and thought it really does give a nice simple explanation of the situation.

if i were a liberal and/or had voted for Obama this would offend me a little bit....way to over simplified. fortunately neither applies to me, but still, there are those who had good reason to vote for him.

that being said, it's true. at least that's why Obama won by the margin he did. i wish it weren't, but the fact is, he's dug himself quite the hole. we'll see what happens.

...i bet i could go to my class of 100 tomorrow and find 10 people who voted for Obama that couldn't even tell me what the basis of the stimulus bill is, how much it's costing, or even be aware of it at all. whatever.

Um do you remember the people on election day saying that all their troubles were over and Obama was going to pay for everything. Sounds to me like they thought he was buyin the ice cream. They didnt even know how he planned to do anything they just voted for him because they thought he would give them everything they wanted.
