Good Edits Without Good Skiing

So I have made a few edits here and there, but I always find it hard to give my edits that certain punch you get when your skiers are doing eye-popping tricks.

The skiers in my edits are the kind of people working up to do 3s and 270s off boxes.

I know I have seen a few enjoyable ski edits without great skiing, but I am just curious if you guys have more examples so that I could see some techniques to explore this winter.

Most of the time I feel like edits without good skiing is meant to be a feel-good and smooth edit, without any crazy popping effects or any slow-mo.

I guess my best example would be Abe Kislevitz's edits. The skiing is decent, but I dont remember seeing anything in his edits that really stuck out as incredible or unique. The edits however are some of the most enjoyable. Why?

Any vids or recommendations?

first off, i know what your saying with Abe's edits but most of em have kick ass skiing.

second of all your not gonna find a solid feel good edit without slow mo or any other effects... lower level skiing for sure, but the editing has to be good!! :P cant, not have both(lame editing and lame skiing) and still have a good edit.

Here is pretty much the "big edit" i made for last season, the skiing in here is incredibly mediocre, but i feel like this was one of my better edits. ** i didn't film tho so i could be in the video :)**

let me know what you think...would be more skiing but there is only 1 other skier in our "crew"

Here is a video i made from footage from earlier in the season before i got my camera and all I had was a GoPro, so the filming is poor and the skiing is mediocare, but hopefully my editing made it a little bit more enjoyable. I tried to make the colors warm, maybe to warm but whatever first attempt at color correcting with poor over exposed footage. Tell me what you think.

Granted he is pretty good, but this edit is mostly on small features and jumps because of later season injuries. I liked how it turned out.

A video that only focuses on tricks is nothing more than porn. I get bored of videos that are just crazy tricks. I find that videos that focus on everything but the actual skiing are far more interesting.

You don't need good skiing in order to make a well-crafted video. Focus on the essence of skiing rather than just the tricks and you can have a great video. Show attention to detail over the little things that make up the bigger picture: digging, traveling, being in the middle of nowhere, etc. These things collectively make up the experience that is skiing, and if you include them in your videos you'll reach your viewers in a much more comprehensive, emotional way.

that was awesome, loved it all the way through, especially all the different shots and perfectly alligned with the music. extremely entertaining. I've got a few questions if you don't mind.

1. What'd you edit with?(after effects?)

2. what did you export in? (was it .h264?)

3. what method did you use for colour correction?

4. for your next video can you put more skiing in it! :P that was the best bits

Thanks! that is a big pet peeve of mine when music doesn't align with the video and it looks like it should so glad you enjoyed that.

I edited everything in FInal Cut Pro 7, exported in h264 to match youtube/vimeo settings for hd and for this video i did all the color correction and grading right in FCP.

and yes im thinkin my first winter edit of the season will have more skiing than boarding for sure

sick! how did you go about matching youtube settings? is that just 1280x720 and mkv? or is it more specific? what was your final file size/bit rate?

thanks! subbed

if you look on youtube how to upload hd video to youtube they'll give ya some good ones but i use compressor with final cut pro, export the video in its original format which was about 5GB and then after compressing it to 1280x720 with the h264 compression rates and just tweak some of the sound settings to aac and it gets down to about 450MB to upload to youtube in the best quality

who are you to tell people how to edit. People can edit however the hell they want. Just cause you dont like it doesnt mean that they shouldnt use it. Fuck you.

well i think what he's getting at is the fact that there is some excessive warping on a couple of the shots. some of them look pretty good but maybe on those few that warp kinda bad to not use it. he isn't telling him how to edit, just his suggestion of not using that sort of slow mo effect on a few of the shots is all

If you're trying to whore views, I'd consider good skiing to be very important

If you're just making a video for yourself and your friends, who gives a shit how good the skiing is.

it wasnt bad with the editing, but the colors were, terrible

it was still way too overexposed! almost hurt my eyes and in some shots you could hardly see ant snow texture.

what program are you color correcting with? did you make sure to bring the whites down into the visible spectrum or whatever its called, on the graph?

I was more getting at the fact that if i've learned anything from M&A, just stay away from twixtor.. it's amatureish and overused.. sure, sometimes, when used correctly and without warping, it can be cool, but for the most part it just shouldn't be used.. yes i am a beginning editor/film maker but i am sure almost anyone who knows what they are doing would agree with me..

The reason he was giving you shit is because you are in no position to be telling people how to edit, especially considering the fact that you're a "beginning editor/filmmaker" and just reciting "rules" you've read on m&a, which is really a horrible source to be citing in the first place.

I thought the Twixor wasn't the problem; I found it to be fairly suitable. I feel like the editing needed a faster pace, if anything. Colors were great, in my opinion.
