Going out west

ive never been out west before and im goin out to jackson the week after this week. i was wondering if you guys had any suggestions for how i could adjust to the elevation faster so i dont get real tired skiing and hiking because im only gonna have a half a day to adjust before i ski+ Karma for good answers
 
seriously, you dont need to worry about elevation at jackson at all. i live in DC and go to jackson every year and never have any problems. that being said, be sure to drink lots of water a few days up to your departure and continue drinking throughout the trip. pack advil to take each morning also to minimize small aches and pains. have fun man
 
i wouldnt worry about it at all. drink a shitload of water every day. you may not be able to push it your first day. just take it a little slow if you feel winded or anything. a couple ibuprofen and you'll be golden
 
If you could lap the tram all day I would be very impressed. Sam (Aenigma) is referring to 4,000 feet of vertical drop at Jackson not a base or summit elevation. The base at JH is around 6,400 and the summit around 10,400. Its a huge mountain. Last year I got probably 50 days on the snow and I dont think I could have lapped it without taking a few breaks last winter when I was there. Obviously I never tried because the tram wasnt there. 4,000 vert is alot especially when it is all very steep. Dont quote me on this but I would guess its all probably 30-40 degrees on average. Obviously there is alot steeper shit.

Back in the day when my dad and his brothers were skiing down there they would race the tram back down from the summit. 15+ years of ski racing prepared them for this type of thing. The new tram is so much faster that it probably isnt possible with the new one.
 
Never mind I just contradicted myself I fail.

Jackson hole does have one of the most continous vertical drops on the US though.
 
Back before I broke myself and skied 80-100 days a year we would do non-stop laps from top to bottom at the end of the day. About 3/4 of the way down I wouldn't be able to feel my quads anymore, and at the bottom my legs would be twitching. But I've also never claimed to be in good shape, either.
 
Depending on the snow conditions it wouldnt be bad to go top to bottom in the morning without stopping but at the end of the day, thats pretty impressive. I've always thought tram laps are kind of a waste with modern Jackson crowds. Most days you are better off staying on the upper mountain and away from the base. At least when Ive been there.
