Global Cooling? wut

Daily mail is like... The FOX news of the UK. And the writer is extremely unreliable. I mean it sounds awesome! But... 2013 was still above average for heat around the country.

The ice cap grew IN A YEAR??? NO WAY! Its almost like... the earth gets colder at some point during the year...

This would be dope if it was true. To bad the acidity in the pacific is rising at an alarming rate due to all the co2 being absorbed by the water. They just had a great article about it in the seattle times.

Global cooling was a conjecture during the 1970s of imminent cooling of the Earth's surface and atmosphere culminating in a period of extensive glaciation. This hypothesis had little support in the scientific community, but gained temporary popular attention due to a combination of a slight downward trend of temperatures from the 1940s to the early 1970s and press reports that did not accurately reflect the full scope of the scientific climate literature, i.e., a larger and faster-growing body of literature projecting future warming due to greenhouse gas emissions. The current scientific opinion on climate change is that the Earth has not durably cooled, but undergone global warming throughout the 20th century.[1]

The earth goes through stage, it cooled in the 1970s, now its warming.

pretty much.

orange line is about where it should be right now

Not a reliable website at all. The ice may be more than last year but it is well below the average. Also, this image only shows surface area of ice. Volume would be a more appropriate measure. Honestly human, induced climate change is occurring. The weather station in Hawaii recently measured carbon dioxide at 400ppm for the first time ever in May of this year. Pre-industrial times measured below 300ppm. The majority of the worlds qualified scientists can't be wrong about this. Also, I'm not backing my stats up with sources because I don't feel like looking. I'm about to graduate with a BS in Environmental sciences so thats the credibility Im going with for now.

thank u, but my tongue got hurt and got red. and i live in a hot place so it should be hot not cold and so global cooling is true

From a very ignorant point of view you could say Global warming is a win win. If it doesn't happen/happen as badly we will continue to ride in happiness. However if it does happen Antarctica and

(and possibly other places???) will become bearably warmer and we can ride there. Antarctica will become the new mecca of skiing and the earth will no longer have nowhere to put its growing population. As a bonus there wont be anymore hipsters due to no suitable location (all coastal urban cities will be abandoned). Just a theory but I think its bullet proof haha I wonder if I'm the only one who has ever thought this?

the fact that people still worry about global warming is a fucking joke. No one is willing to stop and actually do something at this point, so why should any of us?

The planets fucked over, lets just leave it for the next generation and see what happens.

I mean, he has a point. My job is reducing building's energy and resource usage. I'm a huge enviro nerd but I'm still on the fence on anthropogenic climate change. As was mentioned above, skepticism is healthy. That said, I know we have a gigantic impact on many other Earth Processes, and it couldn't hurt to reduce our emissions in the process. Regardless of our impact on climate change, I believe our industries should (more like, NEED to) work together to create a close system process which entirely eliminates the idea of "waste", and Planned Obsolescence type products will turn into upcycled materials.

Plenty of people ARE doing things as you say, but TOO MANY are complacent and doing nothing because of being brainwashed on either side of the debate. People too frequently either feel overwhelmed and act as if there's nothing they can do to reduce our impact on the Earth, or they don't believe we have any impact and thus don't care to help.

I hate the phrase, "global warming" Due to its unpractical application. I prefer to call this all, "climate fluctuation."

I drive a v8 pickup haha. but I don't drive it in the city unless I really need it. Haven't turned the key in weeks.

the earth has at least temporarily stopped warming (the last 10-15 years or so) and pretty much every climate model grossly overestimated the amount of warming and climate scientists are scrambling.

also I think we are heading towards global cooling on longer timescales right? unless this short-term global warming is enough to change that. which it might be.

you sir, are correct. but it's all speculation based off of a not-very-well-understood-and-rather-new niche of science.

I've had this mentality for years now: "Fuck global warming, it's irrelevant to the bigger picture of humanity".

Global Warming (or even Cooling for you hipsters) doesn't have anything to do with the more important subject of human survival. The human element in the big picture of global warming is the issue, not the actual warming of the planet. By this, I mean we are using unsustainable resources and unsustainable practices to keep society going. Ignoring what it is doing to our planet, we are still fucked if we keep this up. We have to switch to more sustainable practices and 'greener' ways so we don't run into an energy crisis, so we can keep feeding everyone (EVERYONE - NOT JUST THE RICH), and ensure we have clean drinking water well into the future.

What humans are doing is foolish towards the greater good of the species, even if you ignore global warming and climate change. Because of this, I'm always very confused as to why the topic always comes up... It should be a non-issue when you talk about why we need to stop harvesting our resources and being so wasteful with our goods.

The only big thing, and a quite large one, that we are using unsustainably is oil. I have no idea what happens when we run out of petrol because we depend on it for even the most basic things.

That being said i agree with you that it isnt a terrible thin that the earth is cooling. The earth will bounce back from anything. One theory is that as the earth cools and the ice caps melt the ocean currents will slow down. Without the warm ocean current running up alongside europe (which is why it doesnt snow in the uk even though it is the same latitude as canada) they will go into an ice age and the added snow cover will actually bounce enough sun rays back into space to reverse global warming.

You got that right.

Basically anyone who thinks Global Warming and planetary destruction is on Earth's Horizon is still in the age of "The World is Flat"

assuming our orbit is going to remain stable for that long, and nothing else catastrophic happens before that.
