Glass...or...Drone

Recently came into an extra grand, really want a drone, because lets be honest it's cool. Think it would add some unique shots that kids at my level in school wouldn't have/couldnt get. But theres always the idea of getting more glass, can never have too much. Don't know what lens I would get just yet. I do know id get the Dji Phatom 4 though. Thoughts?

If i were you i would defienitley buy a drone esspically if your gonna buy the new phantom 4, it will add variety in edits that.

New glass

I have a drone and honestly I wish I spent it on a 70-200 instead

Honestly do you see your self using it a lot, or it coming in handy. I feel as if it may be awesome but it may also get left behind like a sock that has a hole in it but you don't want to throw it away. I

I am team Phantom, even got the hookup on it too so I save some $$$ if i go that route.

Id hop on the drone train, they look so fun to play with and the shots look amazing. the phantom 4 is for sure neat but you could save a ton by buying the phantom 3 professional, and then have more money for glass in the future. the main difference is the phantom 4 is easier to fly and harder to crash, which could be worth it to some but the 3 is fine as long as you be cautious and learn how to use it.

Honestly the only reason I haven't used it is because I can't drive. When I get my license in a month I will drive to a bunch of places to use it but right now my parents don't want to drive me places just to get a shot

Also depends on what your glass collection looks like too. What do you have?

Currently working with a A7sii

16-35 F4

55 F1.8

85 F1.4

I think if I went lens I would go with the 70-200 2.8 but sony hasn't "released" it yet. I personally like all my lens as of now, not too sure what I would add, thus thread.

I mean he doesn't have a long lens, do none of you guys shoot on a tripod anymore? A 70-200 is a very valuable lens and IMO essential.

Didn't even come with a kit lens, just dove right into the prime life being a film major, ad got the other to try skiing.

I do 90% video and can't see myself using a 70-200 atleast not at the moment. All my work has been very small places, and close up vibe, never needed that guy. But he's gonna get added in once I make a decision.

You should rent one sometime and go shoot with it, you have an 85 so you can kind of get the feel of the wide end, but being able to crunch down to 200 is so nice for so many situations. Sitting around your subject or being 'trapped' will limit you, go outside of your current box and try to only shoot over 100 or something, you'll find yourself doing things different and it will help expand your skills.

Get a lens

Drones are over hyped, the technology is always changing, they are dangerous, require insurance if you do any real shooting, and generally are just a hassle. A lens won't depreciate as much as your fancy phantom 4 will

I don't disagree with any of this but they don't require insurance

Eheath hit it perfectly in both his posts. I have a 100-400mm Canon lense and use it a lot more then I would of ever assumed. I wish I had the money for the 70-200 f2.8 I have used it and love the capabilities of it. A lot of recent edits are all stabilizer heavy, its sweet to see but sometimes a good old tripod shot with a long lens is just as effective.

Well technically speaking, if you get paid for any drone job, you need a sec. 333 exemption from the FAA. You might have also heard about the recent requirement of drone owners to register said drones for a small $5 fee. There are lots of jobs for drones filming properties, and most agents won't book you, or let you near their property if your not insured.

If you don't want to do any of that, at least be a smart drone operator by knowing the no fly zones, and safe flying environments. Honestly, theres only going to be more regulation moving forward, and I would go with a timeless lens. Like I said before, drone technology is changing super fast

Get the lens you will use it a lot more than a drone. I have a canon 100-400mm and a phantom 2 and phantom 3 advanced and phantom 3 professional. Drones are great for very specific shots like wide establishing shots and landscapes but you won't use it as much as a tele lens. If you want to get into drone cinematography then get the drone but you'll need to get FAA exemption that cost a good amount of money to get and have drone insurance for shoots. As a film student you'll learn more with a tele lens and use it on a lot more projects.

the 70-200 2.8 hasn't dropped yet for me, plus its like double the price of a drone probably with me not knowing how much I'm gonna use it. But with the way everyone is raving that lens no matter what company it always gets good reviews. I may just need to go that route. Thanks everyone for the input!

good luck and you can always find amazing prices on lenses here https://www.keh.com

Theres a 70-200 2.8 in great condition for $1300 i think (don't take my word for it)

An FAA 333 exemption doesn't actually cost a lot of money. Most people pay someone to file for them, in that case it DOES cost a LARGE amount of money. However, you can do the paperwork yourself and save yourself a nice chunk of change. It's super confusing, and time consuming but if you want to save thousands of dollars i would recommend just filing yourself

So assuming you do the filing yourself, how much would it roughly cost?

"... There is no fee associated with petitioning for exemption. However, all aircraft operations conducted under a Section 333 grant of exemption must use a registered UAS, and there is a minimal fee associated with registration. Details are available at:
http://www.faa.gov/licenses_certificates/aircraft_certification/aircraft_registry/UA/...."

If I remember correctly, it just takes a while. Both to file, and the waiting period.

If you file yourself it can take up to 6 months to get. So most professional drone operators I know paid a few thousand to have a company file all the paperwork for them and got it in a less than a month.

I would only have to file if i was using the footage for commercial use or flying in an area i wasn't allowed?

I was only planning on using it for personal use and in areas that I'm allowed to fly, my house, some parks, etc.

Is this correct?

I hopped on the Drone hype train right away. Pre-ordered the phantom 2 and then did the same with the Phantom 3. Thought it was super sick and loved flying it until one day it lost connection and crashed itself. So then I was in the hole about $500 just to get it flying again. Sold my phantom 2 with a ton of accessories and shit and lost about $1200 on it. Because it was after the phantom 3 came out. So then I was flying my phantom 3 a lot for about the first month. After that, I just found myself letting it sit at home for awhile and then going to use it and having to update everything. It became a pain in the ass. You don't use it as much as you think you will. They really don't add that much style to your videos IMO. I would go for the glass and not jump on the drone hype.

Why not get the phantom 3? You can get those things from like 400 and then you would have some money left over for glass

I don't know where you have seen the DJi3 Pro for 400 bucks, but some of the features in the 4 interest me. Plus as I said. Got that hook up. But I think that the Glass seems to possibly be leading the race currently.

I wasn't talking about the 3 pro, just the original 3. I'm more into photography though so I would probably just go with glass.
