GL2

How do you like the GL2. would anyone recommend it for skiing videos. How does it work in low light and how is it for the snow and the beach. Is it worth the money? Is there something cheaper or around the same price that is better.

my friend has one, and we use it for bmx footage, which i would assume makes it great for skiing

This is stupid... he's now the army's greatest asset. Why would they assign him to Antarctica? WE'RE NOT FIGHTING PENGUINS HERE, PEOPLE. They should have him skiing lines in the dunes, picking off terrorists with his homing poles as they gape at his massize switch 9 over Abdul's Gap. - JDMay on T$

Okay, I am also looking at a GL2 for next years ski season. Here's what I've found out based on my research...

The Gl1 and the Gl2 are essentially the same camera. It will be slightly harder to get your hands on a GL1 due to the fact that they are discontinued by Canon (replaced by the GL2). However, if your on a tight budget, and can find a GL1 for a few hundred less (they will probably be VERY close in prices anyways..) then go for it.

Now, I've heard that the GL2 does a really good job on low light situations. Apparently, there is a comparable Sony model (Vx2000???) that preforms much better in low light than GL2. But, the GL2 still does a really good job.

It has a built in optical image stabalizer which should definently come in hand for follow cams and that sort of thing. The lens is amazing which is understandble because Canon Optics have always been incredible. And, the image quality is pretty incredible as well.

All in all, it's an amazing camera for action sports in general. You'll see tons of people in skiiing, snowboarding, and skating movies filming with the GL2(1).

(This is all based on what i've read, and what i've heard from people who use the camera. I personally don't own one...yet ;)

Yeah man those 3CCD cameras are definatly worth it. im buying the Sony VX2100. if you want to know if it's good for snow shooting and dark light, then just look for features like "white balence" and see which cam has a broader range of exposure.

I highly recommend the GL2, I've been using it for about a year and a half now and I couldn't be more happy with the camera. The only thing I could possibly ask for would be the ability to shoot 24 fps however you can get some fucking sexy ass shots non the less. If you wanna see some ski footy with a GL2 just PM me and I can guide ya in the right direction.

Frame mode is the fps feature itself. What he's saying is that the fps seetings don't go to 42 fps for some reason...though I doubt you need it that slow. The best thing to do is to shoot on 29.5 fps (professional level for standard motion)and use a program for all of your speed editing.

when i went to a camera store to check it out. the sales guy showed me a movie he made in mammoth during the summer...all i have to say is wow! and i held both the sony and the canon and the canon has a much better balance while in hand which will help when trying to keep the camera still...but you wont need much help with the stabilizer on there

tanaka, you don't know what you're talking about. the vx21 is the best camera for low light under like 4g's.

My weiner is probably harder than yours.

i just got a gl2 this season and it is super sick. if you get one make sure you got money for some extras like lenses, a tripod, and all that kinda stuff. if you wanna see footy from one look at the last three videos i have uploaded in my profile (they are all named steamboat something).

I never said the GL2 was the best low-light camera. I just said it helps if there's a white balencer and a broad range of exposure. But as far as the cameras themselves go, yeah. The Sony VX2100 is better for that stuff, which is why that's the one I'm buying.

I was just saying because we are comparing cameras and people were asking for the pros and cons of both. Most times when you want audio you are generally using an external mic anyway but for arguments sake the GL2 has a better stock mic (im not saying there is a huuuge difference, just as there is really not a very large difference in picture quality between vx2000 and gl2).

The vx2000 performes amazingly in low light conditions, better than the gl2 and it has warmer colors as well. vx1 uses 12 bit sound which most filmers prefer on rails and for skating in general. In terms of wideangle/fisheye lenses, the vx1 has the century mk1 death which is the widest .3x lens made. And you can get a century mk1 intermediate for the vx2000 which isnt as good as the original but its still better than any lenses compatable with the gl2.

bottom line: sony > cannon

what do you mean by 'warmer colors'? with a manual white balance you can achieve the same colors I belive, yes? you can just use warm cards or numerous others techniques.

Gl-2 is a great. camera. i use it for school and it doesnt do it justice. its a great camera. my friend just bought one for 1.5 g's with lenses, found some super deal online. its legit also. good camera.

by warmer, I think you must mean more saturatd color, which you can adjust anyway using a good editing program.

no i actually do know what im talking about to an extent... And Im not talking about whitebalence. go to ANY real skatefilm website and youll see. I just know a lot of semi-pro filmers who hate the Gl2 so i learned that way. But I dont know anything about how it shoots in snow, so i cant compare it there.

And its still a sick cam but im talking about the details.

this thread from one of their forums sums it up:

an excerpt over this same debate...

"It makes me feel like im in a preschool whenever i decide to look in one of these debates. All I can ever hear anyone say is "MINE IS BETTER!!!!!" Most of you have no idea what the things are that make a camera trully better than another cam. When compairing the gls and the vxs there literally is NO DIFFERANCE. They are all low quality 3ccd consumer cameras, that can get almost exact duplicate images under close to the same conditions. None of you even know what the hell you're talking about when you talk about the things that are better about your camera. "It gives a "truer" image," will get you laughed at by any profesional videographer out there. First they will ask you what the hell that is even supposed to mean, then they will tell you its pretty much the same camera as all the other consumer 3chips. Please stop acting like you know that your camera is sooooo much better than the alternative because you keep hearing it on here from some other kids that dont know what theyre talking about."

thats not quite true.. but we'll call it even for now if you want.

i'll just leave it with that the vx1 is still better for filming skateboarding mostly cause of lens options and much better audio. But the gl2 is better in low light and probably better in snow. But you can't say "they're all low quality 3ccd consumer cams" and therefore theyre all the same. They have different looks and i know this cause my dad is a film maker and theres tons of differnt mini dv cams lying around beside film. , from the Sony PD170 to xl1s

They're both sick cams. I guess it really just comes down to the prefrence of the smaller things on the camera (i.e screen size, veiwfinder size, camera size) but other than that, they're both the same. I'm just getting the Sony cause I like the way it feels over the GL2. It doesn't mean one is better than the other. They're both awsome.
