Girls who don't have pink names?

Just curious why you chose not to?

I'm sure this will go sideways but I'm curious and if I don't ask I don't think I'll ever know.

When my wife was on here she chose to be blue to avoid being targeted for having an opinion and dealing peoples bullshit. ?‍♂️

it used to be really bad, i don't think it is nearly as bad as it once was, it's come a long way.

people treat girls super weird online, not particularly on NS but it happens here too

i get why some girls don't identify themselves, ive seen the most insane messages and replies that girls get from internet weirdos, from pathetic flirting to visceral hate

the internet is a weird place. one thing I've noticed on current NS vs NS of like 10 years ago is now when someone is being a prick or whatever people are generally good at calling it out right away which I think is great.

For sure, idk if it's a general culture thing or what but being a total knob and saying vague condescending shit isn't popular on here like it used to be

Yeah, all the fun got sucked out of it harder and faster than a girl on prom night.

It's amazing how far Newschoolers has come. It's a main reason why my sister quit being on here about 10 years ago.

....good to have you back Trina

When I joined after lurking for quite awhile it seemed like at least half the women had blue names, and those who did tended to be taken more seriously and receive less gross treatment than those who had pink ones. I wanted to be judged on the quality (or lack thereof) of what I posted - I never hid that I was a girl (hell my username is clearly a girl's name), but I didn't want it to be a standout feature. And I was never given reason to regret it.

Then recently - after a decade of having a blue name - I was forced into a pink name with no explanation. I just posted one day and my name was a different colour. I haven't been able to figure out if this has happened to anyone else but it makes me surprisingly self-conscious about my posts because I stand out so much more.

THIS. I've been on NS for almost 19 years, and it was horrible back in the day. I've always had a blue name, partially for this reason but also because I'm not a fan of the color pink. It's slightly irritating that I can't access the Lady Gabber because of it, but I'm not active enough of a member anymore for it to really matter.

This is SO GOOD and spot on. The demeanor toward women/girls on NS and from the skiing community in general toward me as a female skier made my life pretty miserable for me in my late teens and early twenties. Even with a blue name, I experienced an insane amount of harassment the first few years I was on here. But I've also met some of my favorite people thanks to NS. This is such a weird place.

I used to not have a pink name but then I decided I wanted a pink name to bring more attention to my shit posts

like how a poisonous or venomous animal has bright colors as a warning

The name Piss_Boy might not help you here, but there have been various instances of guys getting pink names over the years - I feel like maybe it was Big_Spence that was turned pink by admin as a joke for awhile. Another went pink so he could infiltrate one of the women's cults back when those were still a thing.

I'm not sure how it works now, but when I registered one of the first questions was whether you were male or female. Then the next (at least if you were female) was selecting whether you wanted a pink name or not. So I never pretended to be a man - I registered as a woman when I created my account, I just didn't select the box requesting a pink name. Which might be why I'm bothered by the change - they didn't realize I was a woman and set things "right", they decided that after a decade my choice no longer mattered. And they didn't even have the courtesy to tell me. Which... I get there are a lot more of us now, but if someone had the time to change my name colour, surely they had the time to tell me why. Even an automated "you're pink now, good luck with the teenage boys" message would have helped.

I should check and see if I can post in the Lady Gabber Forum now. They set it up to filter based on pink/blue instead of female/male, so I was unable to back when it was created.

I think of skiing/outdoor community as something that opened me up to being more accepting and welcoming and open minded and generally more friendly and loving .... but then you come on here for the first time in years and see the Sierra thread ?‍♂️ and see some of the most hateful/homophobic/toxic shit imaginable.... and remember it’s a lot of teenage trolls wanting to participate/learn about skiing, but ultimately anonymous hiding behind their keyboards spewing hate into the void....

it’s similar to when I was a kid but I think it’s gotten worse with social media and general polarization in the public discord. It’s like either ppl think you should be able to say whatever you want regardless of hurting others feelings or you should be cancelled for stepping outside the new norms...

When I was a high schooler I probably didn’t realize how bad we were bc we shit on everybody and used derogatory terms for EVERYBODY at any given time - not just women.

it was almost as though bad language were a way to buck the system, but then you meet different types of ppl and realize that words actually do have meaning.... and your just as bad as the “system” if you’re continually putting people down

maybe a lot of young ladies want to be on this sight but ya don’t want to feel like they have a target on their back.... definitely sucks how many ppl on here lash out w some sexist/hateful stuff.... but the internet is just people... and you get all kinds, even within communities that you would normally expect to be more open minded.
