Getting to sleep with pain- calling Dr. NS

Where-am-I

Here is the deal. Just over week ago a sprained my ankle pretty badly and fractured my fibula. Now I'm finding it almost impossible to sleep. I couldn't get to sleep at all last night. Tonight i took Vicodin (prescribed by my doc) and am already not able to sleep because of the pain.

Who has got pro-tips or magic tricks on how to get sleep with pain.

kind of unrelated, but when i sprained my knee putting it up on a pillow helped with the pain. definitely not as bad as your pain I'd bet, but it helped so maybe try something like that

Explain why you're beating off. He'll appreciate your honesty and reward your straightforwardness with the customary hand job

what do you have on your leg? cast, brace or anything?

i've spent probably close to one year of my 19 year old life on crutches/wheelchair. The pain will eventually go away but sleeping just sucks. Use alot of soft pillows to keep your leg elevated and supported. I used to take a spoonful or two of nightime cough syprup to get me drowsy before bed. Didn't work to bad but theres probably beter ways out there. Good luck on your recovery man.

thanks. i have a walking boot but it is very painful to sleep in, i typically wake up 40 min later if i go to sleep with it. ill try cough syrup sometime, that sounds like a good idea. also, sounds like you had a much more intense injury experience than im having, story-time?

It isn't as bad as a broken bone in my leg but when I broke my hand listening to music (with earbuds) and/or having something softly playing on the TV usually put me to sleep. Anything to take my mind off of it.

I'll tell you mine...

I fell longboarding doing about 40mph and lost a good bit of skin over my entire body. I took two weeks worth of vicodin in two days. I couldn't wear pants or a shirt because I would fuse to the fabric. I had to sleep on seran wrap covered in vaseline. easily the most miserable two days of my life, not to mention, I couldn't fucking shit because of the vicodin.

valuable lesson... getting your wisdom teeth pulled is pussy shit, it doesn't hurt, DON'T TAKE YOUR MEDS, save them for when you really need them.

simple version, I was 14, and dirtbiking in some local trails, came ripping around a blind corner and kid on a atv was also ripping around the same corner going the other way. Don't remember much until until i got to the hospital, Broke my left kneecap, right ankle, and fractured my right heel, this all happened on the first friday of summer vaction. Had surgery to rebuid knee. Spent the rest of the summer in a wheelchair, then crutches at school for a few weeks. Had surgery to remove screws and wire, nothing serious but was still out for a few weeks. Jump about 3-4 years later. Knee was starting to bug me, went back to surgean, took x-rays and found that my left tibia has not grown since my accedent. So this is where its kinda hard to explain, but basically my legs was curving because my fibia was 4 years ahead of my tibia. So to fix that he put on a spatial frame. Basically what he did was cut my tibia and then screw a bunch of rods into my leg. Every day i had to look at this chart and turn these nobs on the frame to the # the chart said, when i turned the nob it would very slightly pull the two halfs of my legs apart. I also had this done the day after my last exam. spent the whole summer plus had to take semester off of school(which wasn't too bad) because of sanitary reasons. Once i got it taken off, about 5 months after having it on, got put in a cast from my ankle to hip. Basically now its pretty much normal besides cracking alot, and skiing kinda sucks, the area where my tibia was cut is also the same area where shinbang occurs. So thats pretty fun at times. Gald I didn't do the long version. Heres a pic of what something simular to what i had on my leg.

dub post but ya, also try to stay off of vicodin/T3's etc...

they will plug you up worse then a hibernating bear

Pics?

My thought on pain goes two ways.

-Most of the time we don't understand as modern day humans that we will endure some pain with a severe injury, meds or not. Suffer a little bit. Your body is broken. Opiates will not make you feel "fixed".

-Don't "self help" by concocting some scheme, like cough syrup or some nonsense (feel like an acetaminophen overdose? take more than your prescribed dose of vicoden and cough syrup then). Ask your doctor and be honest. You cannot sleep, AT ALL, because of the pain. You would be surprised how many people say they can't sleep because of pain when getting triaged in the ER because it sounds dramatic, then fall asleep in the waiting room because its a four hour wait at 3 am. The doctor fully expects to see you looking/sounding like shit when you clearly ask for more pain meds. HOWEVER, doctors really have no problems giving out more pain meds to deserving people. If thats whats needed, do not feel guilty or hesitant to go back to your doctor for advice/further treatment regarding your pain.

To help the situation though, I do advocate RICE, ibuprofen for swelling/pain (as long as ok'd by doctor), and possible blowjobs from gf and or masturbation to take your mind off your leg.

good luck

magnesium citrate is the solution to that problem. cherry flavor. It's $2 at Walgreens/CVS/whatever your local drugstore is called. Drink the 12 oz. bottle and a glass of water and you'll be clear within the hour. I don't care how many opiates you've taken. OK, well, if you're taking hundreds of mgs of methadone daily, it'll probably take a little longer, but a few vicodin don't stand a chance against mag cit.
