Getting older

does skiing get worse when you get older? I'm 18 right now and feeling pretty damn great every time I ski, and I don't want the feeling to ever go away. Is there a way to never age ski wise because I wanna rip at 50

Can't speak to the far future but Im 21 and ive become a better skier if anything. I'm in probably the best shape I've been in my whole life and I'm finally finding my stride. On the other hand my dad is currently in his mid 50s and still skiing and road biking hard as ever. I think part of it is just staying active as much as possible and treating your body well.

Lift, do yoga, do cardio, eat healthy. Build your body now so you have the foundation for aging. If you get injured hit the rehab hard and diligently

Healthy and Active are the key words

I’m 31. Maybe you won’t go as hard as you did when you were younger but I feel stronger in my skiing than I ever have. Just stay active. Try to eat a semi-decent diet. All of the typical stuff and you’ll be fine. I don’t think you’ll ever lose that feeling if you truly love skiing. It will evolve with you

basically everyone I know is way better and has more fun skiing when they are older than when they are 18. most dudes are still getting stronger and growing at 18. smarts and skills can progress through your 40s and beyond. guys I know that stuck with it stayed in shape and didn't over drink or anything too stupid are in prime shape and having more fun than ever in their 50s

You will be able to throw the same tricks, perhaps with even more style. The difficulty comes with when you wreck. It takes longer to recover and the fear/responsibilities outside of skiing outweigh the rewards of throwing down like in the past.

One of my Freeride coaches is 62 and shredding, no signs of slowing down!

Coming up on 27 and I'm definitely the far best at actual skiing that I've ever been. However....there is definitely a slow down that happened around 23-24 maybe. Falls hurt far more the next day. Impacts leave me aching for a few days and hard charging crud all day leaves me walking stiff. I don't ski park anymore either due to injuries+having too many concussions.

Also the whole job thing is a limiting factor. I take a lot more thought into what I'm doing/sending because weeks out laying in bed can lose you thousands in pay. And family/mortgage/savings etc are expensive. Not to mention medical bills stacking up when it happens.

. So progress is slower than when I would huck anything off of anything....but it's also more controlled and leads to better skiing all around as there aren't massive leaps in skill that leave other areas lacking.

This is truth. The skiing has never been better but the recovery has never been longer

have heard the gym/good diet drastically changes this.

until he just randomly has a heart attack after a day of shredding pow (really happened (rip chris woods ?))

My surgeon told me my hip is equivalent to that of a 45 year old man after surgery compared to it being the equivalent of a 65 year old pre op, If I remember I will update if I am able to ski like a tard still

The key is to never stop. I've had friends who stopped for a few years and they just dont ski the same anymore. I just turned 28, and while I haven't been that motivated this season, i still skied quite a bit and feel comfortable on my skis as much as I've ever been. I would say with age its the mindset that has changed for me. When i was 20 i wanted to superfed or 2pretz2 any rail i could, but now it's more about doing those tricks when i feel like it. One thing that i feel with age that can suck is the fact that you've been doing it for a long time, so the excitement isn't the same, and for me a lot of my friends don't ski anymore. But the ones that still do it's always fun to see them

Started at 35, turning 40 in December so it's been more like being older than getting older for me.

Hot take: skiing is better when you're more mature. You don't necessarily send as hard as the young guns and get the adrenaline rush from not dying on trying the craziest new trick. But you get unlimited small rewards instead, which build the hype more and more every day, almost every lap through the park when you hone your skills and tricks which you feel like are yours.

Not stopping is key. I unfortunately started to party a bit more than ski in my early 20s and took a few years off that I’ll always regret. After 4 seasons back on skis this year was the first time I felt strong enough to ski hard everyday for 115 days, yet still ended the season in the hospital. Shit happens.

Getting sober helps and staying in shape has become important to me as I’ve gotten older to be able to perform how I want too. I’ll be 30 in a little over a year and hope to be skiing just as good if not better by then even after just having surgery this week.

Others have sad it. Staying active, a good gym routine, decent diet, yoga, mobility along with good judgements has made it so I am still going in my upper 40's. I'm not shredding as I was in my late teens and early 20's but I would give my young self a run for their money, lol. I've had numerous injuries from skiing and other activities, it has taken longer to heal as I have gotten older but I hit the PT hard and came back stronger each time. I have found myself making better choices as I have gotten older as I do have a family and a job that need me so I dont push myself to the limit every time... there are times that I will test myself still but just know your body. When you are tired, take that rest. Long live the shred! Keep at it and keep having fun!

No, I ski with our shop tech who is 54 and he fucking rips. Also gets insanely hyped the days leading up to his next day trip. He said the key is healthy eating and don’t miss a season, sorta like old farm equipment.. if u don’t use it ya lose it.

Skiing only gets better, your tastes may change but it def just gets better as you get older and your network expands and you have more money and resources to get the gear you want and go the places you want.

37 here. I don't throw down like I used to. But I still ski pretty damn hard and have a fun time.. and if I'm very honest I'm super out of shape I'm trying to fix that right now for next season.

Get it!

i would say its always great.

ive def spend less time skiing, but the quality is so much better.

like i actually have money to enjoy myself

It doesn't get worse the older you get. It just gets different. If you are too worried about it, Seth Morrison was throwing massive back flips off huge cliffs when he was 41 years old. However, be careful on your body with injuries. The fewer injuries you have between 16 - 30, the better. Then again, I bet Seth Morrison has had plenty of injuries before he was in his 40s and he's doing ok. Maybe he's just a freak though.

For me the thing about getting older is I keep getting hurt in increasingly stupid ways. I never get hurt skiing anymore, I just get hurt in the most bullshit ways off the slope.

i turned 29 recently, still progressing. if you want it to last you want to consider doing something for your overall body and fitness and not just when you got injured or already "unfit". :)

I know a guy who's a freestyle coach in his 30's and he threw his first 720 already in his 30's. He surfs overseas all summer and has a killer diet so I'm sure that helps, but he's still progressing his bag of tricks. Think a lot of guys (including me) who "slow down" are more describing their willingness to huck their meat into crud than their ability to ski well and ski fast

I'm 26, have one nagging knee injury that aches now and then. I didn't grow up skiing park, or skiing more than a week a year so I'm not really trying to learn tricks, but my technical skiing ability is way better than it was when I was 19/20. I haven't really been drinking this year, and I can say that coupled with a good workout program has really gotten me into the best shape I've been in for skiing in a long time. Gym is really the key, lifting weights and being strong is your best defense against age. I have a friend who's 31 or 32 now and he is still a supremely strong skier because of that.

I started to slow down around 23 due to injuries and not having enough time to ski. It just made me pissed off and discouraged and killed my motivation. Dont let that happen to you. Id probably still have at least 90% of my old skills if i didnt turn into a lazy piece of shit after realizing I was aging. Instead I just decided to truly embrace the washed up ski bum lifestyle and become a drinker with a skiing problem.

i had a 20ish kid tell me he liked my "fit" in the Forest Park today at Mammoth, so i got that going for me.

32 work 50 hours a week + have 3 kids ski Ohio and am progressing ........ kinda. You loose tricks. A lot of them and you can't really afford to fall hard literally. You'll be homeless and lose your kids or some crazy shit. But if you want to learn them

there is always tricks you've never done before in any/all aspects of skiing and some days it's time to try some shit. Other days maybe not so much. Don't try to go hard stuff. Get loose first is pretty important. Sometimes just hiking the rail or shoveling the lip can break that sweat needed to loosen up

I’m 25 and still mostly ski park, I feel no different from 16. I also never drank (much), smoked, or had major injuries though.

A lot of pros peak around 30 it seems. Stay healthy and steong and you will be skiing hard into your 40s.
