So my mom has a higher end sony point and shoot she bought from ritz camera, and ritz said they would possibly do an upgrade.

Nikon or Canon? what camera would you suggest for someone who is just getting into gig. i like doin macro and candid if that helps.

thanks for any help

i like canon but it's all personal preference. no matter which way you go it's the same question. cheaper new camera or used sicker camera, personally i would go with the sicker used camera if you think you are going to get into it.
if you opt for the canon route, think about a 30d maybe or a 40d. expect to be spending ~700 for a good body here are some good choiceshttp://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/800643574-USE/Canon_1901B017_EOS_40D_SLR_Digital.html
and bhphotovideo will take your nikon point and shoot in trade too, they wont give you much for it but it's money you wont have to spend on this camera

i'm a canon person, look at the 30d or 40d
rebels are good for getting into taking pictures but you'll end up upgrading soon enough that it's worth getting a 30 or 40d, i love the 40d

dont go d60. its uses the same sensor as the d40 but has more megapixels, meaning that the image quality is lower and wont have as good of high iso performance.
