Getting into freeskiing

In the thread about FREEZE magazine, everyone is talking about how it brought them into the world of freeskiing. These stories are all super interesting, and it made me curious how everyone else got here, because it seems like FREEZE is probably before a lot of our times.

I guess Ill go first. When I was 11, I moved to a new school, and it is in a pretty small town, so my school was 6-12. The year I got there, one of the seniors was killing it on the big mountain seen, and was featured in powder magazine. I hadn't really seen anything like this before, so it was like the big bang. Ever since then I have treated freeskiing like a religion.

Found Freeze Magazine on a newsstand in a pharmacy in London, Ontario. Fell in love, saw high north ad, bought session and obsession ensued.

I went skiing with the cub scouts and saw freeskiers in the shitty winterplace park. I wanted to be cool so I started to do hood rat shit and here we are

A little bit Powder mag, a little big Freeze, a little bit Johnny Mosley's mute 3, and a little bit of the Ski Movie series. But honestly, it was mostly Newschoolers. In the early 2000s there wasn't much freestyle skiing content on the internet, and most of my Google searches for things like "skier rail grind" and "ski toxic grab" ended up at NS.

Honestly it'd have to be this, after realising that we do actually get snow here, and having to walk down through this a few miles, meanwhile having 10kg+ of coal left on my back, not to mention a bunch of other shit. I realized I needed to find something less miserable to do in winter haha.

I switched from skiing to snowboarding about 5 years ago. Before that I skied (not freestyle) for about 4 or 5 years. This year I discovered some ski edits through snowboard edits. About halfway through the year, I got frustrated on my backyard setup trying a new snowboard trick. I then threw on my brothers twin tips, learned how to do a rail, and became instantly hooked. I skied park almost every day from that point on for the rest of the season. I progressed pretty fast too /claim. I don't regret my switch at all.

I'm the exact same story. I use to snowboard for 10 years before I made my switch. All my friends skied and I was the only boarder so i felt left out and i hated how immobile i was on a board compared to skis lol. I switched one day at the hill on the last day of the season with my friend and rode skis for the night and became hooked. And same with me I progressed quickly. My first day out the next season I landed a backie first try Haha!!

got sick of racing in the 4th grade (being very small = very slow on my flat ass local mtn)spent a few years trying bumps, got good at them but by then I had already been lurking around on here

about 1.5 years ago I realized moguls were a dying sport as well as being rather lame when it comes to rules and decided park skiing was the thing for me.

I was at the top of the terrain park with a neon dildo strapped to my feet (snowboard) with some super non-baggy gaper shit and saw some retarded looking kids with t shirts down to their knees and some marshmallow-looming pants and asked for a pair of twin tippers a week later for Christmas... That was this season.
