My goal for next season is to step up my game outside of the park, and to get into the backcountry near whistler, but i have no idea what im doing. How did you get into it, classes? guides? where is a good place to start?

Thanks

im also interested in this. you might want to ask some people at escape route in marketplace. those guys seem pretty knowledgeable.

Don't go into the bc at whistler unless you know exactly were your going or else youl have to walk like 8k out through really thick forest.

Id suggest getting a local to show you some spots before you go exploring on your own.

I would say consult a guiding group like whistler alpine guides bureau and look at getting your ast 1 and possibly ast 2. That would be a good place to start.

get some touring gear and do your ast1. but some easy bootpacks out of bounds include disease ridge and doa on blackcomb.

The best beginning is to find a guide, someone who is knowledgeable of the zones and willing to take you around. Additionally, do your own recon and take photos from other angles and plot your entry and exit route. Formal avy training is always a good idea. Always have some tools for simple equipment repairs, a headlight in case you get stuck out late, a bunch of granola and water, never go solo.
Try hiking the Spearhead off Blackcomb glacier to start, there is usually a boot pack and skin track. For a little more fun, skin out to Decker. Try Fissile for an overnight trip.
After you get comfy with resort accessed backcountry, start heading out to Cerise creek, the Diamond Head, and dozens of other places.
Once you feel ready for it, get nasty and buy a Ski Doo. It's the best.
