Getting a cool shot with the moon

1004432.jpegThese were all taken on a like 10yearold nikon coolpix. I don’t think you need a crazy long lense but my newer d5300 with a 300mm lense definetly makes it easier to get decent or rly good photos

This was from the solar eclipse a few years ago. 75-300mm lil canon lens for a rebel t5. Didn’t turn out bad at all.

I've snapped some fun ones with a sony 55-210mm on my a6000

Imo a shorter telephoto like that is great for wildlife and action shots too without breaking the bank, would recommend unless you're really looking for that 300+ long boi.

Depending on how much you plan on just shooting the moon maybe look at renting some nice glass instead of throwing down for a niche 300mm + lens

This is my favourite sequence I saw from the eclipse... Shot on a Pentax 67 with a 600mm

Used a custom viewfinder template and everything. really ingenious.

I would love to compose a shot with some one in the air with the moon huge in the background

you'll wanna use a planner to find out what location/angle/time is going to be best. photopills is pretty great for this, not sure if there's free alternatives.

Ideally you're at +300mm focal length, otherwise it won't be very big. You could look into teleconverters to help though.

what camera? that's such a cool shot

pretty sure just my GH5s and then either a sigma 24-105 with a speedbooster or a shitty olympus 40-150mm. Digitally zoomed in there if I recall.

I tried a handful of times over the years to get this specific summer shot but was always skunked by weather, low horizon clouds, or being away from Burlington during full moons. Thankful that everything finally aligned a ~month ago for September's full moon

I took this shot (one shot of foreground and one shot of moon). The moon was shot at 105mm, so you don't really need a crazy telephoto lens. I also found that the moon is easier to shoot in the early morning hours/dawn. There's less contrast so the moon or sky won't be blown out.

Here are some I have taken over the years:

Here is a crazy ghost cloud thing that floated in front of the moon when I was taking some photos back in Utah. Shit still kind of creeps me out:

This is a 20 second long exposure shot with a wide angle I took a while back. The sun in the photo is actually the moon over exposed:
