Ask the folks who know

If you ask me, I'd say Nikon FM with 50mm f1.8, no ifs ands of buts. Or any other manual SLR, but stay away from auto-cameras like the Rebel.

you probably don't know if you're that serious about photography yet, but I'd still recommend bying gear like you where, other wise you'll out grow your gear very quickly and grow tired of photography.

And if you are serious, there are two things you must not stray from, until you know what you're doing:

1)use a manual, not automatic camera

2)use a only one prime lens for at least the first six months (a prime lens is a non-zoom). This will make a better photographer and is always a better bang for the buck (no self-respecting photog would use the 35-80mm f4-5.6 lenses that come on lower end SLRs these days, get a 50mm f1.8 or f1.4).
