Get Published, Rich, & Famous

You can ride, but can you write? Can you shoot? We’re looking for writers, photographers, and anybody who’s got something to say in the freestyle world. Take your board postings up to the next level.

All you need is creativity, a camera and a keyboard. We want to know where you’re riding, what tricks you’re throwing down, about your unsponsored buddy who’s killing it, what gear you dig and what gear you don’t, competitions you were at, location reviews, etc. Getting into filming? Write about it. In fact, write/shoot whatever you want. If it’s good, we’ll make you rich & famous.

And by that we mean we’ll give you a venue to make a name for yourself in the action sports industry, and give you enough money for three cases of beer. This is more than a foot in the door; this is an opportunity to make a living with the sport you love; and if you’re really good, we’ll give you a weekly spot on our site and a salary.

Submit whatever you got to info@coldwarcollective (attn: Cultural Czar), along with your name and a way for us to get in touch with you to give you your bags of money. If we like your work, we’ll get in touch with you, and won’t publish anything without your consent. We reserve the right to edit and publish all submissions, and all submissions will become the property of Cold War Collective.

Oh yeah, and The Banquet is coming...

care to elaborate on what this is for/ what kind of compensation bling we're talking about.

"Cold War Collective is a commercial production company comprised of the top directors working in the alternative sports film industry today"

" Finally, brands will not risk alienating the fickle and media-savvy youth demographic with inaccurate and poorly executed commercials and branded content."

"Cold War Collective has re-imagined the traditional commercial production company by being focused on the use of alternative sports and culture as a brand vehicle."

and this ladies and gentlemen, is what we call irony...

"Director : Steve Winter/ Matchstick Productions"

so, is this just market research then? I still haven't been able to figure out what this thread is about, and market research seems to be the only feasable explanation...

haha i actually laughed when i read that. But when you think about it, it's not very funny. Kinda scary actually.

Mods, please leave this thread here - I don't want to deny any NS members the opportunity to get published, rich and famous.

"Delivering the future of advertising, Cold War Collective — what happens when alternative sports, authenticity, and commercialism get it on.

Cold War Collective is small but fully elastic, able to handle the largest multimillion-dollar projects and shoestring productions with equal aplomb. While commercials and branded content are our bread and butter, we produce music videos, promotional films and feature films."
(from coldwarcollective.com)

I'm a bit confused as to what benefit soliciting content from the skiing community a production company can hope for, as well as how "authenticity" and "commercialism" can be used in earnest in the same sentence together. If this were a community news project I'd be all for it - but it seems as though someone might want to take your ideas, sell them to Nike for a bundle of bucks, and then send you some pocket change as thanks.

But hey, maybe if your contributions are continually the best, you'll get hired by them, and then it will be your job to take other people's ideas and sell them to big companies! Can't deny that there's career potential here.

Enough from me - although I'd like to suggest that if you want to be published while remaining poor and unknown, you can also send your written work to NS.

We've been called out; that was quick. We've been trying to keep things under the radar (hence the CWC email address) until things are ready to drop, but it seems that a little elaboration is necessary. First thing: we are NOT conducting market research here, or any other such cheap corporate nonsense. Cold War Collective is our commerical production division (everybody's gotta pay the bills), and was started awhile back to help action sports directors and athletes get a bigger cut of the commercials that were jacking their style.

So what's the big secret? We're about the switch the game up on EXPN, Fuel, VAS, 411 and everyone else who claims to be there for the community and is really in it for the cash. Which is why we're posting here. We are looking for contributors from the front lines as well as a few new staff members.

www.the-banquet.com

Keep going there, and very soon you will see what we're all about...

So send us your best articles, bios, photos, hard and softgood reviews, interviews, trip reports; anything creative and original, and send it to either info@the-banquet.com or info@coldwarcollective.com. And while I'm here, the stuff on www.writetheotherway.com would be f-ing perfect.

got other ideas? Hit me.

You can at least thank me for attempting to call out gently, and I'll thank you for the straight-up reply.

"all submissions will become the property of Cold War Collective"

this bothers me. soliciting content from the "front lines" is one thing, robbing them is another.

I know how to write good. Girls want me, their boyfriends want to be me. If you want to look core, you'd hire someone such as myself. Not only would I help you prmote the non-commercial image, but I also have more knowledge about the ski community and it's inner workings then any market researching expert money can buy (hell, 7 years as a regular on this website and skiing with hundreds of people does give me a 7 year head start on any of those consultants you'd hire).

So please, don't waste money on people who can't offer you anything. What I can bring to your company is priceless.

He's not robbing because you get money in return for your work. Plus he states that it will happen so it isn't a suprise to anyone. If you don't like the idea, then don't contribute, easy as that.

Levin you just left one (or two?) of the best/most coveted jobs in skiing for an even better job, that actually pays well, in a sport that you like and is actually cool.

Leave some scraps for the rest of us alright?

this is my point:

if you submit something (article, review, photo, drawing, video, whatever), it becomes the property of these people regardless of whether or not they publish it. you may not get paid. and if you do, it is only the equivalent of 3 cases of beer.

that means that you can't sell or use in a commercial arena anything that was submitted ever again, as it belongs to them.

as a creative person, i take issue with general legal language like that, and i hope that other people on newschoolers understand what a submission entails.

if they changed that subtle and deadly little sentence, i'd be perfectly happy, but it would be in their best interest not to so i'm guessing they won't.

Well if you're good enough to get your pictures and articles submitted in more than one magazine, then you wouldn't go for this offer. This is for the people starting out and I highly doubt they'd get all ripshit if you use your picture you sent to them on some low-end use. I get what you are saying, but it's just how business is ran sometimes regardless of the medium.

Linds-o-rama makes an excellent point, and I apologize for my carless/clumsy wording, and hereby retract it. When I put that in there, it was in an effort to ensure that The Banquet would not be publishing anything that is owned/copyrighted by anyone else- an effort to be sure we will not sued for publishing it. Let's go with this:

By submitting to The Banquet, submitter acknowledges that she/he has ownership of all content contained therein, and has all legal authority to submit it. Submitter also acknowledges that all submission content is their original work, and they bear all responsibility for any legal action arising from it. Again, we will not publish without author's consent.

We are flexibile: if you want to retain the right to publish your content in more than one place, we are fine with that, but we want it to be clear that is the deal. If you're ok with publishing something exclusively with us, well, all the merrier, but that must be clear too.

Again, sorry for the confusion. (Magic Hat is The Banquet's beer of choice; we also dabble in low-grade boxed wine).

i was gonna say, this sounds like a photographers dream, we submit the work and you own it... sweet now i can just delete all that shit of my hard drive!!

can I get a job there? I have a very impressive resume and could get you plenty of references from people who look up to me. I'm serious, hiring me would be the best possible thing your company could do.

Sounds like nothing but a bunch of hype to me...So Cold War Collective, a production company that promises to make your action sports media appeal to the fickle, media-savvy youth, is starting something called The Banquet. We don't know anything about this Banquet, except that we are supposed to send them any and all skiing media, with the hopes that we will reap huge rewards and switch the game up on the big guns in the industry. Excuse me if I'm a little skeptical, but hyping up your shit while still "trying to keep things under the radar" might not have been the best decision. Your website is nothing but a logo, and you haven't told us who you are, what you're planning on doing with our submissions, or why you don't live anywhere near skiing.

what is sounds like to me is this company is promoting themselvs as the company to come to when the outside world needs action sports (skiing) shots, commercials, advertisements, etc. Or at least, this is what they want to be. Sounds like an interesting idea, and if the company has relations with the right people in the media industry, it could definitly be a huge way to promote skiing. I definitly would need to more before I judge on how legit this is though.

basically they want their ads to actually make us buy stuff, instead of yelling at the tv/magazine/whatever saying NOOOOB, NOT CORE

Got my reply back from Zach (thanks Zach).

They seem pretty legit, but just starting out. Keep an eye on these guys and see where it goes.

Oh blast! I wish I read your post before I sent them every sick picture that I've ever taken in an effort to get published, rich AND famous!!!

Don't make fun... exclusive rights are worth way more than a few cases of beer - even if you are starting out. She made a good point.

Sorry to confuse you...I'm not making fun of her, I'm making fun of linds-o-rama, I'm making fun of the title of this thread. Thank you linds-o-rama for clearing that up for anybody who actually sent things in, sorry I guess I'm not good at showing my internet sarcasm.

im deffinatly in, 3 case's of beer sounds dam good to me. that is if this is completly on the level. we shall see

well i think this turned out to be complete bullshit. ive sent in some things. replied to once, and never heard anything again.

i think i got fucked
