have you seen the vid? those poles are there to support the roof, so there were plenty of them. still kinda dangerous (its only 1 m or so away from the edge of the ice course)
 
Yeah I mean all of the poles, they shouldve been padded atleast, I mean they do that for every other sport. Im sure it wasnt padded just because it was practice, but still
 
i got you now, yeah its so sad that someone has to die for such stuff, i mean it wouldnt be impossible to have a wider safety-area between the course and whatever thing that has to be there. these guys go 150 kph, i cannot think that this is the first time someone got flipped over the walls
 
forget padded walls, why don't they just build a transparent cover over the course, that way stuff can't come flying out. regardless, RIP, this sucks
 
That luger track is considered one of the fastest in the world. Many athletes have criticized the poor safety issues of the track long before the olympics..RIP
 
What happened the the original thread??? That one broke the news of the accident and followed the story through? If it was removed, i want to know why?
Also, why were the steel beams not padded like Lift Pylon bases on ski runs?? That is my Question....

Dude, a thread title of "EPIC LUGE CRASH" was seriously inappropriate, considering the athlete died. Granted, he didn't know at the time, but now that we do...

And to the guys who said padding wouldn't have done much, I agree - but there are some serious safety flaws in the design, such as why the poles were so close to the track? The least they could do now is like put a net up or something, but the poles are still there and there's not much they can do about it.
 
I think padding would of helped.... like at the base of chair pylons - blunt trauma such as that would of been seriously mitigated by padding. He still may of died of internal injuries etc - but at least it would of given the medics a chance at the hospital.... i'm sure the athletes accept the risks of doing 90mph on a tray... and that their lives are very much on the line.... but the question you must ask is simply..
Was this preventable? and thats what an investigation will set out to answer...
 
This - it was an interesting reflection on peoples response to the whole thing in real time.
 
that is obviously something many people think about. but from what ive heard, he was 44th in the WC rankings this winter. this doesnt mean that he is a world-class athlete, but i guess he was good enough for a lot of other courses, so there was no reason to exclude him from the event
 
He was thrown from the sled, out of the course, and into a big support beam five feet away. It's not like he could have done something to avoid it.
 
Saw the vid in the original thread. Wish I didn't. That's just messed up.
So are the opening ceremonies being postponed or is that just a rumour? Like this seems to be a really big deal, but the opening ceremonies are all organized and I bet it would be a bitch to change
 
so everyone blaming the course. i feel for this guys family, and its incredibly sad, but isnt this also kind of an inherent risk of the sport?
 
For sure. But this risk of the sport could have been prevented by changing the course design. He still could have been hurt really badly and maybe died, but if there was netting or something like that he would have had a much greater chance. Hindsight is always 20/20. There are many other risks and dangers, but this exact scenario wouldn't have been too hard to avoid.

And RIP to him. Didn't do that in my last post.
 
Guys on the local news station were saying it's a freak accident, sometime the luge comes out of the track, but NEVER the person...

And I almost choked when they showed the video on CTV...they started rolling the video from the top, and I was like 'alright, they'll cut it now...or now...or now...HOLY F*CK!"

They showed that video on T.V. man...where's the respect...
 
yeah, every lift post in the ski resort or anything else that is hard/sharp and CLOSE (10-20 ft) to slopes has to be padded in every single small resort. so how can it be that such stuff happens in the olympics? i hope somebody will pay for that. since i guess that it is a rule/policy thing by the IOC, someting has to happen in this organisation
 
he might have died even if he didn't hit the pole, he got thrown around inside the track abit too.

and for all i know there could be poles next to bits in other luge tracks, its just no one has died
 
I don't know much about luge, but going down a track at 90 mph just seems insane in itself.

It is super sad what happened and it sucks that this dark cloud will be over the entire olympics.

Mega vibes go out to this family and everyone that knows him.
 
I just saw the video on the news and i am disgusted. they definitely should not air that to the country its awful.
