Gainers into pools

Well mainly from the edge of a pool cause I dont have a diving board. When I run up to the edge of a pool and try a back flip i only get a bout 3/4 and do like a dive in. I was wondering if that was normal or am i spinning a bit slow.

And fuck search bar i searched for all you who are going to say searchbar.

i've only got one gainer around just running into the pool, that's hard to do man. flips off the side are easy though.

You gotta keep looking back after ripping your backspin it doesn't really matter on hieght as long as its enough, I had trouble w/ them on 15ft ledges you just gotta follow through

You're actually better off doing it standing. (I used to be a diver and now I coach). Start off with "penny drops" where you stand on the edge of the pool, do a complete circle of your arms, and jump when they get to the top. While you're in the air, work on keeping your arms right where they are and bringing your toes to touch your hands. You should land on your butt/lower back, but done properly it wont hurt. (also when you're starting, jump further out so that you dont hit your head). Once you've mastered penny drops, start touching and looking back for the water (this is a reverse dive pike). After you get the feeling of this, try doing it tuck (you'll spin a bit faster. A gainer flip is basically a backflip travelling forwards, so doing backflips can help. Also if you have a trampoline, put a piece of tape on it, and stand on the tape. Practice backflipping and trying to land in front of the tape (that's also a gainer flip). This trick is all in your arms, NOT your hips. Greg Louganis threw his hips forwards instead of using his arms, which kept him over the board on gainer 2 1/2, which is why he hit his head. Truly, the most important piece here is your arms, they will make or break this dive. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. Also, I realize that some people's egos wont let them take advice from a Newb, but being a varsity diver for 8 seasons kept me off the slopes and I'm just getting back into it.

run quick and toss the leg you aren't jumping off... tuck up nice and tight too.. with practive you will have no probs gettin it all the way around

when u are upside down and at the peak of your jump tuck up real tight and that should bring u around.

it'd be tough to huck it around so fast.. i can only throw gainers off clips and pool towers. all you gotta do is kick the one knee up, look back, and spot the landing. the slow rotation makes it all quite easy, yet dope as hell

I had some other thoughts about this last night while watching tv. If you ever watch platform on the summer olympics, they do a running hop so that they jump and land on the edge of the tower before they go off, but typically they only do this on forward takeoffs spinning forwards. You should not do a running start for this dive off the edge of a pool, and if/when you can learn it off a diving board, start by standing at the end of the board, as it is easier to learn that way. If you have a local college in your area that lets people use the diving boards, you should try it there. Most people think that just running off the board is the right way to go. It is NOT. You need to jump up about 15-18 inches from the end of the board and land right on the end. This will give you all the launch you need to get this dive around, and once you get past vertical (1/2 way through), you will be able to spot your landing. Most people kick out way too early, so stay in the tuck longer than you think you have to.

ask Ryno whats its like when you hit your head off the side of a pool, fun shit. I can do a full rotation and dive gainer and if you want to spin faster tuck up your legs as quick as possible. The dude above said it perfectly except I dont suggest doing standing gainers, Ive seen too many close calls.

You do not need to tuck your legs up as quickly as possible. This will kill your jump and potentially bring you back over the side of the pool/diving board. While doing fast is necessary, its much more crucial to establish your jump with a solid circle and reach (the reach with your arms should be at least to vertical, but is better to go past - visualize a clock face, reach to 1 o'clock) and bring your legs to your hands and don't bring your hands down at all. Bringing your hands down is going against your momentum and you will go short.

Also, I can go past gainer double on the 1M board and do gainer 2 1/2 on high board.
