FWD Vs. AWD

Volvo XC70s aren't that great in the snow. I drove one for a couple years. It's a FWD based AWD platform so it can't split power 50/50 between the front and rear. They don't have any sort of limited-slip, so if one wheel has no traction you're kinda fucked. I drive a 4Runner now and it can get me through snow that the Volvo didn't even have a chance in.
 
All four wheels can slide right off the road...

Snow tires are just about manditory. There are other members on here that can attest to my old FWD 1990 camery having no problem when AWD and 4WD cars and trucks were sitting on the side of the road.

I now have a AWD subaru, due primarily to WADOTs new found idea that non AWD cars need to put chains on whenever there is a few inches of snow on the road.

Generally, AWD and 4WD just mean you get stuck further away from cell range and/or help.
