yeah peps was def a save vs a trick like the OP video. but bigger jumps have always been a part of freestyle. chad’s gap, mega park shoots, whatever simon was doing when he went wayyy past the knuckle lol, etc. JO wasn’t the only one doing it. theres always a thirst for people going bigger and bigger. and i dont think its killed freestyle just went off in a different direction.

jon was the first to take freestyle to the water ramps... and when he built this kicker for him to do trained aerials... and invited americans without that training to hit the same jump that requires training...

jon's jumps were big but there wasn't anything special about them in terms of training. if anything, they were safer because they weren't just massive step downs. a lot of video segments were filmed on those hybrid step-over style jumps in the years after that because the design was so good.
