FS100 Slow Motion Test...

Okay, so I found myself taking a break from work and school work last night and I began to go through my Hood shots with my FS100 from last weekend and WOW they are amazing. I wish I could show everyone some of the shots right now because this camera is incredible. I cant though quite yet. You guys will have to wait for the ARcast.

Anyways, I can show you this because it impressed me as well. I shot a couple of super slow motion shots with it (smooth slo mo as its called on the cam) and was trying to figure out the exact frame rate that it shoots. It comes up at 1080i60 off the camera and the quality of the image is not great (although probably acceptable for online video), but I managed to slow it down 40% more without anything special.

This is a shot that is 10% of actual speed. No optical flow. No Twixtor.

With some tweaking and grading I think the picture might be acceptable for web. I really wish I could throw it next to some other FS100 footage to show how it blends with it, but I cant yet (unless you pm me and bug me for the link).

Is it 1080i60 converted to 1080p24 like the HVX, or are you actually shooting 60i? And what was your shutter speed? Motion looks great, but I would love to see some shots of snow spray to see how it handles ghosting.

It does 1080p60 over 24 as well. Its just the clip off the camera shows up at 1080i60 and is already at 1/4th speed in "smooth slow mo record mode."

I then made it 40% speed in FCP, which would make it 10% of actual speed

So I guess it is 1080i60 at 1/4th speed conformed to 1080p24. If that makes sense?

Oohh yeah good idea, I would love to see that as well. Next time I am up there I will get some with some spray. What else can I shoot to test ghosting? I will have the camera at the race track this weekend as well.

I guess I wasnt thinking when I couldnt figure out the fps, because if it was 1/4th speed at 1080i60 that means it is 240 fps.

I am going to say it was 1/4000th. My Matte Box doesnt fit in my back pack, so I didnt have my NDs up there :(. Pretty bummed about that. You can not go below 1/250 when your in slo mo record mode (obviously).

Ill try to go out and get something interesting with it at 1/500 shutter to test the ghosting.

pretty sure bentley its 120fps, basically 1080i60/120 making it 25% at 30p and a little less (which is what you're getting) at 24p. Unfortunately, the resolution is barely internet worth. I guess you could only tell if you're watch an edit full screen, which i really only do 1 of out 5 times.

I still have to mess around with the smooth record mode. With a bit of sharpening and scaling the frame size down, it could be useful for some things.

Its 240i. Its a 3 second clip that becomes 12 seconds long and is 1080i60. 3 is .25 of 12 and 4 times 60 is 240. If that makes sense. I though it was 120 too until i realized i could slow down the shot thats already 25% speed to 40% of that (conforming to 24).

Looks great when scaled down, but at full screen I'm seeing a lot of the interlacing artifacts I used to get when I shot 60i on my DVX and used time-stretch to get 60f. Or maybe its just the compression...?

yeah 240i = 120p.... dummy 3 seconds into 12 seconds is 25% or 30/120p. when you conform the 60i to 24p it goes down 6 frames worth of speed, so its 24/120 making it 20% at 24p. I dunno how you took the 25% and slowed it down another 40% and made it look good seeing as its not 60p?

i think everyone whos freaking out needs to watch it full screen, cause you obviously haven't. IMO its hardly acceptable at full screen. I wouldn't say this feature should be a reason you want an fs100.

I was referring to the camera, not the actual feature.

Of course I would not mind the feature but that camera is tits.

Speaking of 5k...

Where is some of that Red Epic 5k test footage for us to drool over? :)

Cant wait to see some, haha.

And for those concerned over quality (landis and e heath), the quality is poor. It is acceptable at lower resolutions, and can probably be corrected for certain things, but yes at full screen it is not acceptable and poor.

I was just posting it because I was shocked that it was even able to be acceptable at vimeo size. I had a sony a few years back that did a similar thing but it was like 320x140 resolution or something awful.

Hoping to pickup my child this afternoon or tomorrow, as soon as I get some test footy I'll throw something up here, and probably make the R3D files downloadable as well so people can mess around with them. May take a little bit of time though as we are in the middle of editing. On another note I do plan on making a stupid unboxing video...

i'll make sure this unbox video actually gets on the internet though, i dunno if it will be funny, but i will try to not waste peeps time with it...

Haha maybe one day.

Im looking for an assistant to help me with my work btw. I know your mom expressed her interest in the position, haha. Just letting you know if you want to make a couple extra dollars this summer.
