Frenchies looking for information about a skitrip on the powder Highway

Hey everyone,

I'm going in january on a skitrip for 21 days with 3 friends. I would like to ask for some advices about a couple of things.

We land in calgary on the 7th and we are going to rent a car or an RV for the whole journey and stop in 3-5 different stations.

Do any of you have a good address where we could rent the vehicle in calgary ?

We are not going to do ski touring with skins, just buy the tickets in the stations or build jumps in some places. We're thinking about several resorts like Banff, lake louise, revelstoke, valhalla, whitewater etc..

What would be the most intelligent tour to do? the weather conditions will be an important factor i guess.

Do you think we would need guides to show us around ? especially in revelstoke, so we won't get lost by -40°c.

Or maybe some of you who live next to these places could help us for 1/2 day or a day, in exchange of a good beer/meal :). That would be awesome !

Yes that's not in our plans to go outbounds in an unknown resort !:)

Do you know any good company to rent cars ? and do you think we'd need guides, on we can find people directly when we arrive ?
 
Hey man,

Sounds like you have a great trip lined up. I don't know about renting an rv or cars, but I can tell you that a good route to take is go to Sunshine Village, then Lake Louise, then Kicking Horse, then Revelstoke. Sunshine and Louise are classic rockies, but the terrain I find is not as intense as what you find in KH or Revy. KH has some classic chutes and decent steeps in bounds, and you can find good pillows if you hit it after a storm. Revelstoke is my favorite, I lived there 2 years and it was unreal. Great skiing, lots of cliffs, great trees, pillows, etc. It will always be my favorite resort. Heed the advice though, don't ski passed the cat tracks if you go out of bounds. They use to keep a count of how many people spent the night below south bowl because they went passed the cat track. And on the north face people have died by crossing the boundary line. Stay smart and you'll have a great trip. Hope you hit some good snow!

PS after Revy you could go south to Nelson and Rossland and Fernie or wherever, but know that they are lower altitude mountains, so if the freezing level is high, I wouldn't necessarily recommend them. If the freezing level is low, they are awesome and get huge dumps of snow throughout the season. Bonne Chance!
 
Cana dream rv for 3 weeks would cost you 2500 or 120 a night so 40 a night each. Not the cheapest but it seems fairly convenient. For the trip what skicowboy said is fairly spot on. LL and Sunshine are worth a warm up but I'd just check the snow forcast when you land, In January LL often doesn't have much of the best terrain open yet and a lot of landings on the cliffs are questionable at best haha.

KH is my favourite hill, prefer it over revy just wish it got more snow. Takes a while to get the hang of where to go for the best terrain for that day. Whitewall and superbowl are must hits if they are open. They face east and will have double the snow you find in the rest of the mountain. If your filming they are the best in the morning as the E face gets morning sun.

CPR ridge has loads of fun and wild terrain to chuck your meat off or ski really fast in narrow places. If your just buying day tickets then Costco has the best deals that I know of. Fuez bowl is also a riot and usually has better snow then cpr because it just gets skied even less. There is some really good slackcountry off Kh with some of the least effort to level of gnar I have seen anywhere but this factor also means you need very good avalanche conditions to hit most of it as well as proper training and knowledge to determine if they are good to go.

I can't really go super into detail on Revelstoke as I Haven't skied it enough to know the best spots, Seems like a lot more cliffs and mini golf more snow and loads of slackcountry.

WATCH FERNIES SNOW REPORT, in January last few seasons they havve gotten absolutely fucking hammered with a big storm in January of over a meter in just a few days. Roads usually get closed to if you decide to go for it should try and be there a day before the real storm hits or you may not make it. No guarantees but its a super fun hill with a good combo of fun steep groomer terrain with loads of cat tracks to take to the moon and lots of jibs with a good amount of decently steep and fun alpine terrain.

Red Mountain is one of the best hills I've ever skied on a pow day, Super simple to get around and pretty much any which way you drop off the top you wind up running into some super rad shit. Right under the lift is self explanatory why its rad and its just shit like that throughout the mountain. Again Not the best place if it hasn't snowed in a while or if its gotten really warm and all the snow is fucked but If temps are right and they have some snow coming I wouldn't hesitate to miss it. Whitewater can be a ton of fun as well and is a little bit higher then red. Hill is fairly small though and I find I get bored after a day or 2 inbounds. The touring around is awesome and I've only sampled a small bit but again You need proper experience in those conditions.

Thank you very much for all the good answers, i think we have all the information we need to enjoy the trip and have a good taste of canadian rockies :).

At least until Revelstoke we're good, after we'll see depending on the weather conditions.
