I have just deployed an update to add rating bars to Forum threads. If you haven't already

noticed, it's at the bottom of the page when reading a thread.

You may remember that we launched a new rating system earlier this summer that uses Up/Down ratings instead of a 10 point scale. This seemingly small change has allowed us to more accurately find the best content on NS, and we think that Forum threads should be no different. For now no changes are being made to how the forums look or work, we are simply beginning by gathering ratings. We encourage you to rate threads as you read them.

We'd like to say that we do not intend to change how the forums work, you’ll forever be able to read/post/claim/complain/etc, but we are just adding a new layer on top of that. We want to give you more options for finding the content you really want to read, or find quality discussion you may have just skipped over before, and these additions are just a first step.

just saw this too. really cool idea. i like the idea of being able to search for threads of the week/month/all-time.

That's the spirit! ;)

That's basically what we had in mind. The forums would still look and work as they do now, but you can also choose to search and sort by rating, or find hot discussions from yesterday, etc...
 
We just think everything should have ratings. It's just another tool to help members find stuff. There are many good discussions that kind of just disappear into the ether once they are off the first page. Once this happens we basically have no way to pick it out of the crowd, it's just lost in the shuffle. However we could still go back and find highly rated or controversial threads using ratings.

Eventually thread ratings will also affect member Karma.

Noticed the reply button looks a little bit different too.

Guess we'll see what happens.
 
Really like the sound of that, but won't disliked members just get a bad rating no matter what the thread is? Just thinking, other than that this could be one of newschoolers best updates! Sorry, can't quote on mobile.
 
reply button is now way larger, so I can be less accurate (and therefore faster) when whipping my mouse to quickly get a FIRST in! ;D
 
I really really like this new feture. And the sharing option will be great for when i want to show my friends stuff. Thanks!
 
Just an idea, why not have the ratings at the top so that I can see the rating before I invest time reading the thread? My time is valuable...
 
just the rating bar and # would be nice, and very small buttons if they were to be included
 
Tweaks to the layouts etc will be coming later. Right now we want to start getting people to get in the habit of rating so when they become visible we'll have some data to display
 
Or at a spot where you can evaluate the threads before you click on them. But like Malcolm said, it won't be effective until there's enough data.
 
in my opninion, the share this page and rate this thread is to big, way to big, its ugly to be honest (although i like the idea), and its to much effort to search for the back to thread list link
 
You should be able to see a threads rating before you click on it. Maybe right next to where it says the number of replies/views you could add a third thing to represent the rating.
 
Like mentioned above. You will eventually be able to see the ratings in various places, but for now we just want to start populating the rating so there is some data behind it
 
I'm not sure what this is supposed to do. I don't see any "top rated" thread section and I can't see the rating before I go to the thread.

I don't know it just seems kind of useless the way it is right now.

yes, please. i've been browsing NS off and on all day and I just now realized that the back to forum link is now down below all of the rate thread stuff. it'd be nice if it were still next to the reply button.
 
i think that if a persons thread gets below -100 then they should get a PM from the member NS.com saying that their thread sucks. and it would go into great detail of how much that thread sucks.
 
Seems like a great idea. Will rate all the threads I read from now on. Also enjoying the new reply button.
 
The rating should definitely be in the title on the list page. That way I'll know if I want to actually click on the thread or not.
 
this is a great feature for future use in threadlisting and stuff ...

just out of curiosity, is there any (or are there plans for a) link between thread ratings and karma ?
 
Oh, when you do sort forums by thread rating, do it by past 24h, past week, past month, and all time. I'd hate to lose a good feature if you could only see the best threads of all time, and not something that was popular in the past three days. (And I say past 24h so that it doesn't reset every night at midnight. that's annoying to see two things with one rating on the "day," especially when most of the forums peak visit time is around 7-9pm EST)
 
Everything uses that system, including NS!

Guess you spend more time wanking than you do checking out ns photos and videos xD
 
Not sure how I feel about it? I wish it was moreso rating the original post as opposed to the actual thread. I think a lot of posts inside a thread could steer the direction of a +1 or -1 rating by each member. So even if the OP does make a legit thread, posters can easily come in and screw it up.

And if thread ratings ever show up in the listing, I will slit my throat. Each thread needs a chance. Personally I'd rather not have this option at all, but I'll give it some time.
 
I like the rating, but i would like to see the rating at the top of the thread as well as the bottom. kind of gives me an idea of what i'm getting myself into?
