Foam vs wood

After reading a bigger thread bout foam and woodcores i have something that i need some answers to; Does the pros ski the same skis as we can by in the shops??? I mean, it´s a fact that downhill skiers get all skis custom made. But howabout f.ex. Seth Morrison, isen`t it only the graphics that are the same, and then the rest of the ski i completly designet for him? Anyone know for sure?? I´m only guessing.

Im pretty sure Candide Thovex rides wood core 1080s, not foam. The same probably applies for every other pro.

If you look at Candide's skis, you can see that he has a different base. Same goes for CR Johnson. Probably some kind of race base. I think that a lot of pro's use different skis but we just don't know it.

Tough to say. Most 'pros' get stock skis, some, like the Salomon guys, get skis that come out of the race factory with different bases, cores, sidecuts, etc. Morrison, actually, swears that he rides the production Seth Pistol, but has been testing a stiffer one lately, according to rumours. Go ask him, www.sethpistol.com

Other pros are in the testing phases of new models, so the skis they're riding are prototypes for new production models, and will eventually make it to market in some modified, tweaked form. Hope that helps.

definatly dont ride foam it sucks and doesnt keep its pop for a season go with wood if you have the choice. Also yeah some pros do ski on better skis i imagine most of the salomon guys do ski on the Lab ski not the foam one bec foam sucks ya dig!

Hi mom.

I dont doubt that some of the pros ski on slightly different stuff.

I highly doubt that any salomons have wood cores. its soo expensive to make wood cores when ur not mass producing it. the racing base is easy to put on a ski cause its just the same shit thats on their race skis.

also, only the top pros for each company. fujas, seth, candide, CR will have skis that are different from the public. and they will only be slightly different. base material maybe, sometimes edge material. its just too expensive with R&D and construction to make a ski that is different from the general market.

not ONLY bad things about foam... i mean, it IS lighter... that's about it though. go with wood. then your skis might survive a whole season. foam will lose camber in a few months.

i didn't come here with pants, and i'm not leaving with pants

the skis candide and cr had the only difference was the race base, they didin't have a wood core, salomon does not make a wood core, not even in there high end race skis, they are a microfoam company, no wood at all. First of all there space fram design doesn't require wood, all the integrity of salomon skis lies in the top sheet. also ya the pros test the new stuff like salomon has a site where it shows it 'lab skis' and you can actually special order them, like my friend rode the swallow tail screams last year and they are a lab ski

do the older dynastar candide pro model have a wood core? i can remember but i think they do, also on the older concepts the base is called a racing atelier which i think was a race base that they put on their skis, does anyone have any other info about this?????

--- a s p ---

candide pro from dynastar=wood core

As for 'Racing Atelier', it's a frenglish version of race factory. Probably just a marketing scheme to sell more skis, or done because there was limited production of the old concepts, all made in their quick-turnaround factory?

Hey Papa, the teneighty's that Candide and CR have have graphite bases and a wood/foam spaceframe core. Salomon has been making wood/foam skis for the pilot skis, and their powder skis for a while and they integrated it into a park ski for their pros last year.

Wood lasts longer, and seems to ride better than foam. I also find it to be more resistant to snapping in half. I don't think I will ever buy foam skis again unless technology improves alot.

see most of the time its wood core skiis that snap not foam. foam tends to bend permanently. the wood/foam core is a fibered core. the wood is soo minimal its like its foam. sooo think

hey it aint the foam that bends its the metal in the ski that bends the foam will crack and break.

ya but notice what you said, foam/wood. they don't make an all wood core, but i mean taht's no different from any other company either tahn, that's what the scratches is like a mix of foam and wood

Seize the carp

I have never seen a cracked pair of 1080s where the foam has cracked. I've seen two pairs of 1080s where the foam (whole ski as well) is warped. I've seen some width splits in scratchs though

there are some downsides to wood to, like wood is a natural product, unlike foam, which is manufactured. Now with el-natural products come inperfections, unlike produced foam, which is consistant as conbe. Now as far as there being a all wood core 1080 out there, well, plain and simple, they are out there. the cost a shit load to build tho, because milling down wood is so much more expenive then foam.
