Flying with skis

I just bought a flight ticket out to WA to ski with snowboarder buddies this Jan. Never flew with skis before nor have a suitable skibag with solid protective padding for this kind of trip. I'm going to fly Delta BTW- any tips?

I too have thoughts on whenether to leave em at home to save $$ on skibag purchase & as checked in baggage and just rent skis at the mountain to lessen the hassles. I plan on taking my boots along.

Depending on how many days you'll be skiing the cost may be a wash either way.

Are there any good shops that have a good selection of demo skis available at your destination?

I used an old unpadded skibag last year without issue, had two adult and two kids skis and two sets of poles. I put some other stuff like gloves, pants/bibs, rags to protect edges and whatnot and was slightly worried but nothing got damaged.

For a solo traveler if there's a good demo shop there I'd probably just leave your skis at home.

I like a snowboard bag with wheels. Gives space to wrap your skis with extra clothes for protection and you have space for extra clothes.

Comparing the rental price at $100-145 for about 2-3 days worth skiing while Delta charges $25 of check-in ski baggage 1 way- it looks like I better bring my skis to save $$. Im gonna shop atound for a padded ski/board bag & slip in few pants over my skis for extra protection- any suggestions on brand/model for cheap thats well made? One with few internal pockets at least for me to bring back home sack of greens.

I have a dakine padded ski bag and it's really well made. I've never flown with it but I always keep my skis in it and I've been known to just throw my shit in the back of my truck. Plenty of room for skis and poles plus some if you wanted to put some clothes and pants in it. I bought it off evo a few seasons ago and it cost me bout 100 bucks if I'm not mistaken.

I got couple of Dakine backpacks from Evo in Seattle few years back, I agree theyre well made. Thanks for the tip- I forgot about DaKines making ski/board bags until you mentioned it
