Fly With Ski Stuff Cheaper?

I'm planning a ski trip and i need to fly places to get there. I just checked united's website and it said that one ski bag and a boot bag count as just one piece of checked luggage. I want to get around the second bag fee because it rediculously expensive (50 bucks one way!). Any thoughts on how to do this, like putting clothes and stuff in the ski bag? I'm not too sure i'll be able to fit all my clothes on a carryon. +karma for good ideas

i was just on a flight this week and apparently it is 15 dollars just to have one checked bag and more if it is overweight, length, or height limits. i hate how the airline industry is run!
 
Honestly I think you will be okay with United. Heres a trick. There new service that United, and a few other airlines have, they do Curbside Check-in now. Even though this costs a little usually the guys will drop the extra backage charge if you give them a big tip. Usually their staff is even pretty upfront about it, its hilarious.

The first time I used it the guy was like "if you happen to be generous you will not have to worry about extra charges". I was like Gotchya! haha and ran off the ATM. I returned paid the fee then gave him a $20 tip. Keep in mind that I had a shitload of baggage (over the 50lb limit, which I think is an extra $100). Also I had an extra bag (ski bag) which is supposed to be an extra $50. Ended up saving around $130 and a whole shitload of hassle trying to carry all my baggage through the airport and through check-in.

thats actually not too bad. Im flying US Air and checked their site and my ski bag is considered "oversized" which means I have to pay an extra $100 one way. round trip is $200. then factor in the 9 trillion stops i have to make. im considering either renting some skis when i get out there or possibly shipping them out via UPS.
 
That happened when i was headed up to whistler for coc this summer, the people there were like just do the early drop off and pay us to get the skis on the plane, so im all like haha ok... yeah. epic
