flex ratings

how does the flex index or rating work on a boot? when comparing boots to be used for jumping, what is an ideal flex rating, and which boots are the best.

Ideal flex rating really depends on your weight and skiing ability. What are those and I can tell you what you should wear.

I don't know the exact means that measure the flex. The lower the number is (ex. 65) the softer flex or more forward movement the boot allows. Most stiffer freeride boots such as the 1080 Pro are usualy somewhere around 100, someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I have the regular 1080 and love'em in the park, the flex is just a little bit too soft for straightlining down a groomer but still my favorite boot I've owned.

The 1080's are 70-80 I think and the pros are 90-100. I may be wrong, but that is what I've heard.

flex ratings are pretty simple. Basicly what they do is put a devise in the boot, which measures how many newtons of force it takes to flex the boot a certain distance. Boot flex will very from company to company (like 2 boots my have the same index number, but are slightly differant) because each company starts at a differant baseline. (when I say differ, i mean like + or - 10 on the flex index) for example, i ride the beast, and with them locked up, they flex out at about 120. the 1080, is about 75. Boots can get very stiff to, like the dobe medium, or lange zi/zi which both have a rating of over 150 when its warm.

Thats another thing to take into effect, boots are all made up of different types of plastics, some are effected by the cold more then others. a boot that flexs in at 90 in a 78 degree shop, my flex in at 120 when its 15 degrees out on the top of the hill.

so basicly look for a boot that is apropiete for your skiing style, weight, and aggressiveness. If you a little bugger, weighin in at 120 #'s, and you are not to aggressive, a stiff flexing boot is not for you, Its gonna give ya pain. This is also true, if your a big dude, who is a powerful skier, if ya have a soft boot you will overpower it and hurt yourself.

so do yourself a favor, go see a bootfitter and get shit done right.
