Fisheye or Clean Shot??

I appreciate the artistry of a well-shot fish-eye vid, but I can't lie I totally prefer a video if it's clean HD and smoothly shot and cut.

I can dig the old look but when it gets to the point that the camera is drifting off so much that I can't see the person for half the trick I have to shut it off.

Fish eye is better for skateboarding coz it's about the board. Skiing is about what the skier does with their body so clean shots.

i dont understand what you mean by this thread. you can shoot with a fisheye lens on an hd camera you know.

You obviously don't skate do you lol. Skateboarding is not just about the board..... It's about the body and style just as much as skiing is.

do most of you even watch other shit like skateboarding and snowboarding? hell even some rollerbladers can film proper fisheye. or are you so stuck in this skiing thing? fisheye isnt an old school thing that should be though of as a novelty for "artsy" edits. its the best way to film these sort of action sports. and if you think fisheye has no place in skiing you really need to get out there and see how a fisheye is actually used. SD or HD.

They each have their time, style, and place. Tight spaces need that wide effect but wide spaces need that awesome non-distorted image. It's all about moderation between the two.

I could go for some clean fish eye with no distortion. When clips get distorted because the angle is too wide it aint my thing

Fisheye is distortion. Fisheye without distortion is just wide angle

I'm talking like a crazy amount of distortion

you're talking about a shitty lens and a shitty filmer then. when done right, fisheye shots are fucking badass.

You obviously have no common sense do you lol. I skate everyday, probably more than you. Obviously the purpose of fisheye is the emphasise of the board in the frame. A kickflip involves the board turning. A cork 7 involves the body turning.

I think these fisheye shots were all done properly. Distortion to the point where you can see rounded off corners is too bothersome. Sometimes it just looks like it was filmed on an iphone with a cheap fisheye lens attached.

Anything shot above 240p is garbage. Fuck a SD card, fuck a HDMI, fuck anything that isn't tape.

This just proves you have no idea what you're talking about.

I like sticking fisheyes on my RED camera so i can shoot in 4K

Enough batteries for a day: $5,000

Schneider 50mm T2.0: $7,750

Memory for a day of 6K shooting: $10,000

MOVI Gimbal: $15,000

Red epic Dragon: $25,000

Fisheye adapter: $20

Total: $62,770

It's pretty much the NS filmer starter kit.

(dear gear whores: prices were guesses)

so you feel pretty strongly about this?

It just depends on the overall look you're going for. For example do you want your edits to look like a 90's skateboard video or a MSP movie. Personally unless you are seriously throwing down on giant stuff I prefer fisheye.

There is a reason pretty much ALL action sports use fisheyes. Not to make it look like a 90s skateboard video, because fisheyes weren't just used in the 90s they're still being used today. Don't get why every skier decides to make a short film when the make an edit, it's not at all what skiing is really like and it looks fake as fuck. Have fun, follow your friends super fast with a fisheye and include all the hype. That's how you make a good edit

HD. Better quality and not as hood rat.

It is to be noted that fisheye =/= bad quality, it's literally just distortion of the FOV

There are clean fisheye shots and there are low quality, poorly filmed ones. The title of this thread is stupid as it implies that fisheye shots are inherently not "clean" shots.

Even recording on tape doesn't mean low quality shots.

Yea man I agree. Some I just think some people cant pull off the fish eye lens.
