first skis??

Im looking fo this to be my first season to get into skiing. I have a bud who can hook me up with a pair of 1080's, new, bindinds, boots and poles. all about $800. Is this a good idea for the price or should I look for something else? Any tips anyone has would be great, thanks!!!

holy shit that is way too much! if you are just a beginner get some demoed or slightly used twin tips. 1080's scratch's line's all good skis to look for used. just don't get ones that are too trshed. Have a good skier friend help you.

Uh, $800 too much for new skis, boots, bindings AND poles? Only if you smoke cock to get shit for free or are sponsored. Considering that those skis usually run people no less than $400 new, and assuming that you're getting the 'matching' 1080 set of 1080 boots, S912 bindings, and those stupid '1080' poles, then it's really not that bad. $800 might be a lot of money, but this kid needs to get fully geared up and that isn't free. He's also getting pretty damn good stuff that will last him a while, so he's not doing too badly. You definetely don't need to spend that much, but you can and the only thing it will hurt is your wallet. Cheaper stuff isn't necessarily better, and if he's getting the stuff that I assume he's getting as part of the deal, then it's a pretty good one. Not great, but def. not shitty either.

honestly, get some rentals and learn, make sure you like it and can actually do it before you dump a lot of cash on equipment. This may not be the case as much with twin tips, but with regular high performance skis if you can't handle them the skis will only make it worse.

or maybe i am totally wrong and you already know how to ski.

thats a good deal, most of the ski packages i sell (just skis and poles mind you) are roughly 750 bucks. thats not including boots, which usally run 500 bucks.

allright, thanks for the info. I am still not sure what I wanna do, maybe I will wait just a bit into the season to get the skiing aspect down pat, I know I never wanna go back to snowboarding, too hard on my body now. thanks everyone. is there any good used ski i can get that will let me learn how to ski yet still be good enough for me to do something on besides learn the basics?

hey jib-this. he never said anything about the ski's being new or any of the equipement. and you assume alot about the equipement he is getting. he's just a beginner so someone who is a 'friend' in a ski shop coujld be ass rapeing him with some old ass shit that didn't sell. that was my assumption why was bad on my part and I apologize for. but if this is a good friend you gotta figure he's not going to give his friend who never freestyled skied before some of the best shit money can buy. If I were him I would look in to some older used shit or even rent some twins a few times before i buy. a blind purchase can be a very bad thing.

allright trick720, I am starting to elan towards a different set of skis now, i was in sport check today, noticed some salomon verse 3's. is this at all a good ski for a beginer? they didnt look like a true twin tip but kinda did, im just wondering, any input anyone?

Trick 720 makes some good points. And I should apologize for kinda being a dick, but the deal is still pretty good. I'd say consider it, after you follow some of 720's good advice. I'd also recommend you stay away from the verse 3. It's not a very good ski at all if you plan on becoming an intermediate level SKIER(ie, skiing on runs, in the park, in pow, bumps, etc), though learning to ski on them might be slightly easier. Another thing: Have you considered a soft boot? You'll find them quite comfortable, especially if you're switching over from the darkside.

this is gonna sound bad... but get and older model twin like the original enemy and learn HOW to ski, not jump. Nothing is worse in my opinion that the little snowboarders who can do nothing but ride to the park and strait line to the jumps. dont be one of them

look on ebay or ski shops for some used or demo skis. you can alway get good deals.
