First Gay NFL Player

"Michael Sam, an All-American defensive lineman from Missouri Tigers and the Associated Press' SEC Defensive Player of the Year, said that he is gay in interviews with ESPN's "Outside the Lines" and the New York Times on Sunday.

Sam stated publicly what his teammates and coaches at Mizzou have known since August: "I am an openly, proud gay man."

Sam is eligible for the NFL draft in May. Assuming that he is drafted, Sam could become the first openly gay player in the history of the NFL."

Honestly, I think this is great. I think it could bring about a change to American professional sports as we know it, and soon we will see more and more openly-gay players.

Sport Center always does this... It pisses me off so much. I think the worst was back when Lebrons contract was up and he was potentially switching teams. It was literally all you heard about for probably 2 weeks straight.

Glad to hear it. Hope he gets drafted here he should and more players can be comfortable opening up about this stuff.

There was a story about gay rugby players who almost committed suicide because of how much pressure it was to hide.

I personally get annoyed by all these athletes and celebs coming out from the darkness, nobody honestly gives a fuck anymore, this isnt the dark ages, people dont care nor should they, if everybody minded their own fucking business and the media stopped forcing this shit down everybody fucking troats, maybe things would change

Its not about you. They don't care if you care. They have had a secret their whole lives and feel as if they were to share it with anyone in their locker room they would be ousted. Not looked at the same way, treated different, ridiculed, and possibly even played with/against differently. These players don't come out to be in the media. They come out because they finally feel like they can without the serious repercussions that would have come onto them in the past.

Its not about you. I get annoyed when people think these athletes do this because they want people to care about it.

i don't know that that is the case in the testosterone saturated environment that is the nfl. in an environment that is so driven by "manliness" and "toughness", homosexuality is still very taboo. sure, no one is going to admit to it openly (anti gay), but there's obviously a reason why no one has ever come out before and i assure you it's not because there hasn't ever been a gay player.

I think what people are missing is not the fact that he came out, but the fact he put his potential career at risk by coming out BEFORE the draft. It is one of the gutsiest things someone can do.

who honestly gives a fuck.....I don't go around proclaiming that I'm strait and like girls so why do gays have to be so flamboyant

YAY US! WE DID IT! WE brought an end to all the intolerance, all the bigotry! Doesn't gay mean happy and exhuberant?

I'd care more, if other people cared less. Just as when something like the Superbowl happens and there's always those people that feel like they need to counterbalance the excitement with their "I couldn't care two fucks less about the Superbowl" attitude. That's exactly how I feel about all this shit. The more it gets talked about, the less I care about how far we're "progressing" with our gay acceptance. Which is too bad because I really think they should live their own lives and not have to deal with much shit, but all this attention that gets shoved down my throat wants me to go Matthew Shepherd on a bunch of "progressives"

I'm trying to figure out why I am supposed to give a fuck. What he does on the field has absolutely nothing to do with what he decides to do in the bedroom.

Will the fact that he's gay change the way he plays or the ability he has? No. Therefore, it doesn't matter

what's kinda sad is that you KNOW he's not actually the first gay player, he's just the only one who's admitted it. it's obviously a good thing that finally, in 2014, someone in the NFL is comfortable coming out, but it's also a lil depressing that in 2014, only one guy in the NFL can come out and admit he's a lil different. hopefully the response isn't to yknow, murder him/destroy his career/any other negative bullshit that would scare other players into staying in the closet.

Even though hes an undersized end, he knows how to get to the quarterback and is projected to go in the 4th or 5th rounds, which means even if he slides hes pretty much a lock to be on an NFL team.

Why it matters: Its not so much that he is a gay player, but the fact that the first one came out. There are at least 4 other gay players that have been in the Leauge for a while, but they all have stayed anonymous. This is a big deal because it encourages more players to come out, and the more players who are out, the less it will matter. Hopefully someday this won't be a story, but today it really is.
