Cartier, 1534-First French explorer to reach New World. Then came Champlain in 1603, then LaSalle in 1682-Claimed Mississippi for France. Kind of a stretch, but there is decent evidence that some French Templars were in the Americas in the 1300s.

all Cartier did was map st.Lawrence. Verrazzano brought french people to the new world and this was 10 years before cartier. Cartier might have been more respected and made several more voyages than Verrazzano, but the OP asked about the first french contact

If you take his thread title as it is, it would be impossible to know who the first French American was. First of all, it would have to be an American born from French parents at a time when America was an actual political entity instead of a loose affiliation of colonies. Obviously, after the states were unified in the Declaration of Independence, and more formally under the Articles of Confederation and later on, the constitution, would be the time period. You could point to the Acadians who were banished to New Orleans, but that wasn't a part of America at the time, and New Orleans wasn't acquired until 1803. Can't count Canada because that's not America. You'd have to look into some Frenchman who came to the US after the states were brought together...Shit's confusing, but if you go by your standard, it makes it a lot easier.
