Mt. Bohemia in the U.P. of Michigan just announced next season they will be opening a new ski area with cat specific skiing. Boasting 700 vertical feet, 1400 acres of gladed and open runs over 2.5 mile ridge that continually see's 300 inches of lake effect chowda, this expansion is legit. It will easily be the biggest ski area in the midwest with arguably the best snow. P.S. for those of you who didn't know Mt. Bohemia insists "No Beginner Terrain" and none of the mountain is groomed. You can already ski down the side of the hill to the highway where a bus picks you up for free, Silverton style. They are even offering AIARE Avy 1 Class (what in this world). Filled with cliffs, bumps and gorgeous views of superior, this place really is one of a kind. One of the few gems of growing up and living in the midwest.

Hard to compete with their $340 ten year pass for the lifts. But $150 a day ain't bad for endless fresh tracks of the deepest pow of my life right here in the Midwest.

Why cat skiing? Why not just install a chairlift like normal people?

Because that wouldn't be as cool. I bet they will in the future though.

Because it keeps that section of the resort from being blown out by tourists. The resorts main attraction is the fact that few people go there, and there is only one lift so the snow stays good for a while. Plus they can make more money by buying a cat and selling rides than buying an entire chair and selling lift tickets the same price.

3. There are people all over hell

4. It's too expensive

5. There are to many trees

6. Everyone is really grumpy

I think you think everyone is grumpy because you're grumpy. Every person that I have talked to who has skied at Bohemia thinks its awesome. Its not flat. For what it is, its not expensive. Too many trees, really? Learn how to ski through them, and just stick your arms up to blow through any small branches that get in the way.

lol when you make a follow up post to why its shitty, it kind of hinders the sarcasm

Having been there did you really think anyone could perceive it as how I described it?

Oh well. I was up there a couple weeks ago and was absolutely amazed by the amount of terrain they had. This new addition will be no less than awesome.

The cat skiing operation is going to be in a completely different place than the rest of Mt Bohemia, as in you would have to get in the car and drive there. I don't think we have to worry about ski areas in the middle of bum fuck nowhere on the Keewenaw getting blown out by tourists any time soon. Personally I would not pay more than double the price of a Bohemia lift ticket to ski a smaller area and get less laps in.

I wouldn't be so sure of that. If Vail ever got a hold of that, there would be 5 star hotels and an international airport in Copper Harbor within a year.

That would never happen. Vail likes to cater to the rich gapers, Bohemia doesn't fit their business model.

They might just build a major metropolitan area next to it then.

The mountain they have purchased expands over 1200 acres. Chair accesed terrain limits the amount terrain you can hit because you will be dropped at the same point every time. The advantage to cat operation is you can be hitting fresh snow across 1200 acres. It is a completely different concept than a traditional lift accessible ski area and appeals to different group of people as well.
