First backflip

in fact, don't use your legs at all. just try to slam your head into the lip. if you time it right your head will miss and you'll double

nice one to be the first :)

Go bigger so you can strech out and do them floatier, you got it stuck like your mountain is stuck to the ground tho, again very good to be the first :)

this...

OP I did my first backflip last Jan. (video is on my profile) and i just learned how to lay them out this past weekend, when you throw it, use less arms and use your head more, youll feel effortless when your flipping.

Congrats OP. I just landed my first backie a week ago from today exactly. Going for fronts, front mistys, side flips and back mistys on Friday.

Sorry for shitty quality.

Personally I would google where your nearest Air Bag is. Cannot stress enough how useful these things are. Landing on your head and neck is painless.

I'm thinking ill be able to throw it after the rotation. Throwing it before scares the shit out of me (for now).

Ok.... So I can throw backies on tramps no problem with any amount of air, from standing too boosting as high as I can get and laying them out. No problem. The second I get out the hill though and am standing at the drop in to the jump, I suddenly get scared shitless and always chicken out. I know it's totally a mental game and that once I throw it ill be happy I did, but how the fuck do I actually get myself to actually throw it?

Ok, this is what happened to me, first of all sorry for the english, I'm spanish, I was with a friend in a resort we had never been to before and there was an airbag, we tried backflip once and it went pretty well after that they closed the airbag. We went up the snowpark again and i told my friend that the jump on the video was pretty sweet for a backflip he said let's do it and i told him he could go first, once he did it i got a confidence boost and did it 2, once you do it for first time there's no way you chicken out you just simply do it.

Coaches perspective:

There is a fine line between a little nervous and scared shitless. You know what I'm talking about. I look at the kids that I coach and try to get a sense of where their head is before I try to get them to throw something new. If you are in the scared shitless mode, you are going to be tense and you are more likely to wreck yourself. If you are feeling like that, take a few runs, hit some other stuff, get yourself loose and stoked again. Get your head out of panic mode. Then head back to the jump and see if you can pull it off.

***Congrats OP*** I wish all first attempts on backflips went that well. Bottow line is that you are spotting the landing and bringing it back to your skis. Confidence will improve the more you do it.

In my mind there are two ways of throwing this.

1) The easier way: throwing the backflip like you normally would and after the rotation is completed (or nearly completed) shifting your hips and tacking on the final 180' so that you land switch.

2) The harder way (IMO): beginning the 180' as you take off the jump so that while you are flipping backwards your body is perpendicular to the jump rather than parallel to it as in Case 1.

It's harder to put Case 2 into words but the 2nd version is more like one smooth trick where both rotations take place simultaneously whereas Case 1 is like two separate tricks that both take place prior to landing.

^This. As a newb backflipper (only done a few) the best ones are when I'm feeling it.

My buddy threw a SICK backy a couple weeks ago and didn't even tell anyone he was going for it off a roller. We watched the go pro video and I remember him saying "Duuuuuuude, I was feeeeeeelin it bro, feeling it."

Couldn't be more spot on.

a) That was the only video of 10-15 backflips I did that day. I didn't say anything about that specific video.

b) If you watch the video, I am immediately trying to stop from going further down the hill to get over to the guy recording it. I'm fairly sure I would have just ridden away like I did on the other 9 backflips if I wanted to.

But go back to sippin' your hatorade.

that is a pretty sick backflip OP, but I just have to say, when I did my first backy, it was off a 40 and it was laid out. almost cracked my head open, but all my friends were dicks and said I would fall and hurt myself, so CLAIM

what he actually said...

"Duuuuuuude, I was feeeeeeelin it bro... *tags drag from massive doobie* ... feeling it"

Congrats dude.

I just learned the hard way on Wednesday that not all jumps are created the same and just because you can backflip on one jump doesn't mean you can do it on another.

So after landing a bunch two weeks ago, I tried them again on different kinds of jumps. Under rotated 3 times in a row on bigger jump with a much larger knuckle. I came up probably 6 inches short all 3 times and face planted or shoulder planted.

So I said fuck that jump and took it to a smaller jump with no knuckle and a steeper downslope and ended up over rotating it 3 times in a row.

Finally found the perfect jump at the end of the night where I could land it no problem but only got to hit it twice before closing.

I guess my point is, I have a long way to go before I can backflip any type of jump. I need practice learning how to speed up the rotation if need be or lay it out and slow it down so that I don't over rotate to my back.

I guess this just comes with experience. Learn something new every day on the mountain -- Wisdom is a powerful tool

I have the same problem, I am looking for the perfect jump to throw one on. I am starting to say screw it and throw one on the jump with the steepest lip I can find.

Well first try was kinda good, fell afterwards, but whatever

the second one was a tiiiiiny bit overrotated, landed flat on my back (nothing else happend, for the first time I was happy to wear a back protector ^^)
