Firewire Editing

I have just purchased a Sony miniDV camera. At the moment I will be using a USB cable to trasport the media to my computer. I've noticed that everyone on the website recommends purchasing a firewire card rather than using USB. What I would like to know is why? What exactly does the firewire from of media trasport do that is so much better than USB? I want the best results. Somebody please clue me in this firewire stuff

firewire can handle a shitload more data, so you get full quality and it runs fast
