finish on BC's?

This might be a noobie question, but please don't flame me for it.

What's up with the finish on Scratch BC's? They aren't 'laminated' like most other skis I've seen. The edges of the top-piece seem like they can get pocked up really easily, and there's no protection from getting scratched. I can also feel the seam between the top-peice and the sides of the ski.

Are they supposed to be 'unfinished' like this? Or is there supposed to be a clear-coat laminate and I just saw a bunk pair?

Thanks

It's a matte finish. It doesn't scratch easily, although you can get a few slices in it if you hit it with an edge or something. Old scratch FS and BCs (03 model BC) had glossy topsheets like most skis, but this was an 'improvement' on the design (and pretty much the only change made to either ski since 02/03). It's not a huge deal.

If it helps... I'm kinda jealous. I mean, if I was going to only have one pair of twins, those might be them.

yeah, its a soft, matte finish topsheet, and that joint you felt was cause its a sidewall ski. i really cant beleive youve never seen one, cause that construction method has been around forever. most recreational equipment uses a cap construction, where the topshett folds down to the edge. they are tougher, but dont ski as well.

^I don't know if that's always true, though... I mean, the Mad trix line ski just about as well on groomers as any twin.

yeah East Coast Style, I haven't really seen 'em around. These will be my first 'real' pair of skis. I'm just coming off a shitty old pair of recreational skis, so I guess I'm just used to the fold-down you described. I just wanted to pay out and finally get some equipment I'll be happy with.

Thanks for the information guys

the thing abouth cap isnt a rule, but its generally true. 90% of preformance skis are sidewall construction. but if you like park, and butters, a cap ski will have less torsional ridgity, and make these kind of thricks, easier. they are more forgiving, and less liky to hook an edge while landing ect. so if your learning, they arent a bad idea. but again, ther is alot more that goes into how a ski rides then how they do the topsheets. that just usually how it is.
