Finding ski with metal detector?

so i lost a 2012 surface live life in some deep pow at alpental today. Super bummed, it was my first time using em too. A patroller recommended trying to rent a metal detector and find it tomorrow, but i'm not sure if the detector has the range to find a ski buried 3+feet in snow. has anyone ever done this?

Same thing happened to me but I dug it out after about 2hrs. Good luck with the metal detector, I think it would just depend on how good of one you rent.

if you got with a bunch of metal in them (fks, sth 16's) i think you'll be able to find it with a metal detector.

get yourself some pow straps for next time. i feel like the metal detector would only work if it was really nice cause there's not a lot of metal in skis.

Well if you lost a ski at Alpental last night I found it under a bunch of snow, and I set it on top of some packed powder. But anyways Alpental is getting dumped on!

yaaa bro get some streamers at least. I lost one of my bacons the first day I skied them. took 3 hours to find it but I couldn't imagine giving up and losing a ski.

This, I'm a dedicated ice coaster so I don't know what this three feet of pow stuff is you're talking about, but everyone knows you never leave a man behind.

yeah man, i looked for 2 hours and had 2 buddies help me look for about 45 minutes of that. I was exhausted of climbin around in the stuff so i skied down on one ski and sat down for like 30 min... when i went back out with my buddy's snowboard to try again they closed the top of the mountain so i couldn't try again. feels bad man

A good metal detector will probably work.

For anyone else reading this, go buy a roll of -40 flagging tape and tie about 10 feet onto your bindings. Then bunch it up and tuck it up between your powder cuff and your boot. It really works wonders and is biodegradable.

this. and lost helmet cams, the find sir's at Alta Ski patrol found my buddies contour a few weeks ago with the recco in no time. Should be able to pick up a ski no problem

I once double ejected to multiple tomahawks and lost a ski. Straight up looked and dug all day, and never found it. Went and picked it up in July. It sucked. It was my first pair of twin tips.

Keep in mind that a ski can run under the snow without leaving a track. It could be down below where you lost it originally.

saving lives and keeping people safe is their job. I highly doubt they will go out and use it to help you find a ski when it has been snowing. their first priority is to keep the slopes safe

patrolers usally sweep the whole hill with recco at the end of the day, so they would probly turn up with your ski. or if that doesnt work, tell them you saw a slide where you lost your ski and that there could be people buried. they'd be pissed, but atleast you would have your ski back

people aren't just dying left and right all the time, and I'm sure if nothing else is going on most patrollers would be more than happy to help out a customer. I've personally never had to, but have heard of several people finding their skis this way
