so ive been importing .mp4 files into the timeline with no problem, but now only some of the .mp4 files work. Has anyone had this problem or know how to solve it? i really don't like converting using mpeg stream clip because it takes so much longer.

thanksssssss

tough luck. FCP doesn't edit native h.264 footage, so your only option is to transcode to an editing format (ideally ProRes LT) using either the FCP Log and Transfer plug-in or MPEGstreamclip.

Also, considering how much time you'll save rendering and previewing transcoded footage, editing raw h.264 is monumentally slower.

MPEGstreamclip transcodes using pre-existing codecs that are already on your computer. If you have a new enough version of FCP, you should have all the ProRes formats.

so i'm using FCE 4.0 that i stole off the internet and i don't have any prores formats in mpeg streamclip. is there a substitute? i can't deal with h.264, rendering everything constantly is too huge a pain in the ass

I think that Apple intermediate codec is good. (AIC)

it s not as good as pro res but from what i heard for normal users you cant realy feel the difference.
