FilmerUnknown

That's awesome of you guys to do this, filmers definitely don't get enough credit sometimes

Maybe one day... but this contest definitely doesn't put us in a position to pay salary and travel for another full time filmer, not yet anyway...

This is awesome :)

I have a little question though, if for example I film a friend to make a Superunknown entry, can the same footage be used for FilmerUnknown ?

Because you have this rule and it in the Superunknown Official Contest Rules that says "Online distribution or release of video submissions prior to the announcement of finalists will result in immediate disqualification of the entry". Does is only apply for THE Superunknown edit as a whole ?

Glad you dig it!

The same footage could be used for both FilmerUnknown and Superunknown submissions, though the goal of FilmerUnknown is really to focus on the filmmaking aspect- not the action. Also, qualifying round submissions will be sent to Level 1 and won't be released online publicly. Finalist entries, shot with the provided Action Cam kit will be released online- but at that point there's no problem with overlap of footage if that's what the applicants want to do.

Matt Ballard for the win...he's an artist ladies and gents...he even makes my sub-par skiing look good hahah

Noah Wallace's is in my opinion the best he's put out. So clean.

You're probably thinking of another contest...

There's no "free labor" involved here- we're not putting anyone to work here and asking them to do it for free, or having someone create content for little/no compensation that we're then going to turn around and monetize.

just quoting this to make sure this question gets answered. Can we post stuff this season and then potentially use a portion of it in our submission?

this is exactly the contest I was looking for. So stoked Level1

I really dig the idea, but I can't imagine how you'd judge such a thing.

Even if someone puts some Scorsese like movie-skills into an edit he would have a hard time if the (park) skier simply isn't good enough. And "good enough" on a newschoolers movie section top-rated kinda base is like throwing at least both ways cork9s along with some insane techy rail stuff.

The FilmerUnknown contest has nothing to do with ski skills, and everything to do with camera skills...

There isn't even a requirement that submissions have any skiing in them at all. We do however require the at least 45 seconds of the Qualifying Round submissions contain some sort of action sports content, but this is just to make sure that potential Finalists have a grasp of how to shoot action, which is certainly a skill in its own right. We aren't judging the action though... just the filming.

I find it laughable that kids are expected to submit theoretically sick edits filmed with expensive dslrs/etc and glidecams/mics/multitude of lenses, only to be a sent a sub-par go pro equivalent to film an edit with.

How does that prove their talent? I want to see them shoot with a camera that could actually film a L1 movie, not a go pro. Seems like a Sony advert and no more.

Gotta level the playing field somehow... and this is how we're doing it.

No one expects a POV camera to offer the same range and quality that you'd get out of a DSLR kit, or any of the other interchangeable lens kits that people are running, but that's not the point.

Providing the 10 individuals that make the Finals with the exact same set of tools to create images is the best way to allow the most talented individual(s) in the group stand out. We've always believed that it's about the camera operator- not necessarily the camera...

Anyone who's a professional making a legitimate living from filming probably won't care to take the time to enter... so we're interpreting this to mean that anyone who does take the time to enter is still an amateur.

its so fucking wack that the finalists have to be filmed with that joke of a sony action cam

if i make it to finals you're gonna get a 90 second pov of my gouch

K so give everyone a Sony Handycam then. That's still miles better than that crap. Giving them a go pro (a tool that anyone can use out of the box) completely insults the years of learning that these filmers have regarding white balance, aperture, focus depth, etc. A good filmer knows how to get the best out of his gear, that's a big part of what separates them from the millions of GoPro wielding gapers.

Not to mention that audio accounts for a big chunk of the filmmaking process, something that the sony cam doesn't do well, really barely at all.

If want an editing contest, give them the same batch of stock footage, but don't cripple them filming wise by giving them a GoPro.

I'm actually really interested on what the final rounds are going to look like. I've seen crazy shit shot on an iPhone 3G before.

Really stoked on this!

"We've always believed that it's about the camera operator- not necessarily the camera..."

this is only viable to a certain extent

thats a good point. at one time i believe this could have been true where the camera operator made all the difference, but the fact is that there are so many excellent filmmakers out there and the fact that its action sports only lessens the possibilities of the number of angles/ shots. I feel like there is going to be such a marginal difference in this contest between the winner and the next nine finalists that its kind of going to be a crapshoot. The contest is a great way to get excellent filters recognition and some accolade but I do not think that anyone is going to really stand out that much so to speak.

If i read it right, nothing was mentioned about maybe doing a collab. What if there are two filmers that make one edit together? Is this aloud? Basically like what happens when you have a "crew" that are all helping eachother making edits and certain people are better at certain things? Just curious

*allowed

and no. you couldn't have two people share a superunknown edit just because one could spin right and one could spin left.

if you're a filmer that can only do one thing and has to rely on others to film other aspects, then this contest isn't for you/

you have to have a good understanding and ability of all aspects, IMO

Wasn't really asking for me, i know some people that have like 3 guys all get different angles on a shot so i was asking for them
