Anyone know if any promoter is putting on a film fest in either Milwaukee or Minneapolis area? Long gone MWSFF (Midwest Ski Film Festival) use to be the crew to put on a good show but haven't for 6 years now...Hoping someone is stepping up to the plate again.

Cheers.

Why don't you organize it instead of waiting for someone else to do it? 10 steps to success below

1.) Call and/or email ski film companies to setup licensing deals for their tour. They're always looking for local ppl to show their movies.

2.) Call venues to setup rental deal (college ski clubs can sometimes get free venue rentals on campus).

3.) Secure sponsors to help pay cost of licensing movies and venue (ski shops, local ski company reps, etc.).

4.) Reserve venue, license movies, and setup after party spot.

5.) Build website, social channels and respective online events to promote festival.

6.) Promote, promote, promote and then promote some more (online ads, hang posters, tell people to their face, sell raffle tix for prizes).

7.) Ask "pro skiers" to attend.

8.) ?????

9.) Profit and become local hero.

10.) Rinse and repeat next Fall, continue being local hero.

As added bonus this shit looks good on college applications and job resumes.

If you want to make the trip up to the Houghton Hancock we have a Rail-jam and film showing on Halloween. Bit of a drive but it's a good time.

I might be down to make the trek if the weather is decent, if I can find someone to go with, and a place to stay. I got a bike and it would be sick to shred the trails around houghton and ski in the same weekend.

I've got an extra room if you've got an air mattress.I also have a big couch along with knowledge of the sickest trails in the area. Might be worth it to tell your professors you're sick and come up Wednesday and Thursday.

The rail-jam is right in the middle of campus. There will be a few other Newschoolers competing and i'll be taking photos. Afterwards it's ski movie showings (zig-zag), free gear, and chilling with the sickest ski and snowboard club in N.A.

No festivals that I know of, but UW Madison’s ski club is premiere Level 1 Zig Zag early December.

Also Unaffiliated Productions is premiering their movie at Tyrol Basin Nov 10 after a railjam!

Going to try and make Unaffiliated's showing. Otherwise there is a Warren Miller showing in Wausau, WI.

Appreciate the word. Honestly, would love to. Would have a lot of building to do on my network of skiers in the area...

Yeah building a network can definitely take some time. If you setup an event like this then you'll probably meet a ton of skiers in the area pretty quickly

I really wish they would do something like this right now. I am going our of my mind at home. I have been actually a low key concert rat ever since I was probably around 13 years old. I would save all my money and buy tickets to different shows. I have been really into not just he music but also kind of the who process of organizing the whole thing from picking a venue and setting up the location to getting in contact with the different companies that provide stages the lights the audio whatever your brain can imagine. I am actually currently working as an event planner and we have organized some of the largest shows in the country it feels like. I cannot stress enough how cool it is and just how important it is to have good contacts in this business. I have to say that one of the best shows I ever did was last year and actually one of the reasons it went so smoothly was because I had the whole works made by a local company that provided me with a 10x12 stage with a decent enough lighting and audio systems (the vent was fairly small) and honestly they have been super professional they have been on time and there has been no technical glitches. Honestly I was super excited. It was an amazing event. If you guys are in need you an check their homepage here: outdoorstages.co.uk I can honestly say they are one of the best. I really wish we will get back on track soon and we will have just a semi-resemblance of normality soon.

You know what? I'm so sick of hearing this shit. Yall are STRAIGHT UP TRIPPIN with this hate on WM screenings.

Yeah, it's an unpopular opinion on NS, but fuck it, I absolutely freaking adore those films. The people at WME are good ass people doing good things in our community.

Yall have this twisted idea that they're some kind of Mickey Mouse corporate money whores, when in reality, they're a little huddle of nice passionate people who care more about our industry than any screeching newschoolers neckbeard nobody ever will.

A few years ago, for one of the WM tours, I towed a film sponsor's shit around the country to all the premiers, and I actually got to see just how the machine operates.

Conclusion? WME is an important part of our fragile winter sports ecosystem.

If you can't understand that, then what the fuck do you even know?

But but but! I heard their films have product placement and their format hasn't changed in like 70 years! What about that drama 10 years ago with what's his name? I hold skiing to a different standard than the rest of the professional sports world! What about me me me me?! Wee wee wee wee! I don't like them so no one else can either! I haven't even seen one of their films since I was a little kid!

Shut the fuck up.

Look around. All this? All that you love and fight for and hold so dear? The pros, the gear, the comps, the films, the sponsor money... where do you think it has its roots?

/rant

Whew, anyways... midwest ski film screenings...

We hit a mix of small hills, and especially in the midwest, the screenings seemed like a really huge event for the townies.

Those screenings brought so much joy and stoke to people who otherwise had no other big hype event to bring their community together.

Skier population not too dense out there, so people were real nerded out. They had these twisted expressions like they were trying to play cool even though they were about to burst with excitement - being surrounded by their peers and feeling included by the industry.

I'll never forget how the crowd's eyes would twinkle when they were sitting there with their friends and families, seeing their wildest dreams validated on the silver screen. It was really touching.

Besides, it was a really big break for some of the athletes and teams and niche ski brands that were getting sponsored and paid.

Midwest pros would show up at their local screenings like mayor of Awesomeville, Illinois big man hometown hero shaking hands kissin babies... Real wholesome stuff.

Didn’t those “good ass people” that care so much for the industry sue Level 1 and Warren Miller himself? You can shut the fuck up, those movies have been trash since the 90’s.

Ah there you are, Exhibit A.

That didn't take long at all.

Warren made a fuckload of money selling his likeness and voice to WME. The contractual terms of the sale were crystal clear.

You think that if the guy that voices the Geico gecko wanders out of his mcmansion to do an Allstate feature as liability lizard, they'd rain hell on him?

Highly compensated spokespeople like Warren dont't exist without non-compete.

There's plenty of low-compensated spokespeople who sell their likenesses too, like say Monster Energy Drink girls, who would get their tits ripped off if they tried to walk a runway at fashion week.

Warren breached his contract, WME gave him a little finger wag, then they kept on honoring their agreement to pay royalties to his family, even though he, you know, breached his contract. Which i think is pretty chill of them.

Level 1, well that's a very different beast and I have super weird conflicting interests and feelings.

So story time, I ran into them in a sketchy ski shop in Gulmarg when they filming Pleasure. They were nice. We were both hiring guides, and they took the younger brother, I took the older brother. After that kind of encounter, I feel kinda bonded to them. I'll always be a big fan of their shit. I could never bring myself to be against them in any way.

Do I think that this lawsuit dragging out has something to do with the fact that absolutely nothing will stand in the way of their vision, and they're unapologetic about it, and that's part of the reason I like em so much?

Yes, because they came in to Kashmir on the same flight as me in the middle of a week of retaliation bombings in Srinagar that had the place crawling in cold war m-16s and State Department reps personally urging us not to go. On top of that, the avalache conditions were insane. Buckwild shit.

So my opinion on their WME spat can only be summarized by what their guide told me when I asked about em at the apres, "Lol those are the craziest fucking skiers I've ever seen. They just like fucking yolo-ed everything."

Lol love that shit.

Did they violate a trademark? Ehhhh thats for a judge to decide, not me.

But hey? What do you do when you're torn between two sides?

I just like em both so much and hope they can settle it in arbitration and walk away.

The lawsuit is a small part of both parties and doesn't define either of them.

Oh and here just so yall don't think I'm full of shit:

And hey if yall L1 locos show up, don't forget that lawsuit still ongoing.
