Just got done talkin to Rob from Sun and Snow Ann Arbor and this guy is awesome. Shop is sweet and he is really trying to push the twin and not traditional skis. Well firt of all they have a movie night where they're showing WMF new movie, and also he just got approval from the city to hold a rail jam!!!! That amazing since Ann Arbor is super strict! Check out there website for details and www.sunandsnow.com rob is an awesome guy! He's trying to get some cheap trip together also to Boyne Highlands and maybe a few other places. Wants trips to be cheap!! mad legit

The rail jam isn't posted cause he said he just got ann arbor agree with him to do it. I'll talk to him this week and see when when he plans on it going down!

I'm for sure gonna be there, Sun and Snow is tight.... Rob said that if we didnt have snow that we were just gonna get some from the Zamboni's... im stoked

Alright... it's official. 1st Annual "Get Rad 80's Rail Jam & Throwback Party" on Sat, Jan 2, 2010 at Veterans Park Sledding Hill in Ann Arbor. Monster is on board, Skull Candy for the DJ tower, Line, Salomon, Nordica, Rome Snowboards and a lot more. We want to get a crowd so bring people even if they don't ski or ride (tell 'em to bring a sled) Also, top prizes for best 80's gaper suits... raid your parent's attic.

Cleveland, Detroit, GR, Kzoo, Ann Arbor, TC, Toledo, Lansing... Spread the word quick. Anyone who wants a stack of cards to hand out to friends, shoot me an email

rob@sunandsnow.com with your address and I'll send 'em out to you this week.

Pre-Registration will be required, as well as a signed waiver (Parent/Guardian if under 18) and a helmet.

Counting on you guys to get the word out... let's make this thing huge

whatre you guys thinking the prizes might be?...if its sounding good might drive up from cleveland

Im guessing they wont be anything like "The Bob" prizes...cuz those were some pretty high stake prizes. Im guessing 1st place will win a pair of new ski's max.

we're talking with our sponsors to make the prizes worth coming from a few hours away. keep checking back, or hit up sunandsnow.com/railjam every few days for updates. I'll let you guys know asap

Alright guys, time to get the format picked and this is your event as much as it's anyone else's. So here's my thoughts... A lot of you are coming in from a few hours out which is awesome.

My #1 priority with this event is to make sure you guys get the most fun as possible out of your time here in A2, Mich. so that you keep coming back year after year.

What I don't want is a competition that makes you guys sit around all day, waiting to make 2 runs... That would suck.

Tell me what you think about this... we go straight-up jam session format, and have prizes going on ALL day long (sickest trick in next 15 minutes on the battleship box gets this pair of Oakley Goggles, best trick on the rail in the next 15 minutes gets free $150 footbeds, best trick on feature of your choice gets this pair of Skull Candy SkullCrushers, etc... you get the point)

That way you guys just focus on doing what you do, the judges keep judging, there's a ton more opportunities to get as many prizes as you can get, and there's absolutely zero downtime.

As far as the big prizes... we can do a short final session at the end of the day with the skiers & riders that collected the most prizes throughout the day.

The prizes aren't going to be Rails2Riches, but their sweet... Top prize is a $1,200 pair of FULLY CUSTOM boots... no joke. I'm talking Salomon SPK Pro Model ($549), Fully Customized Shell (not just the cs stuff, but the WHOLE shell matching your feet dead on... this is usually $150-$200), Full-custom molded footbed ($150... these ain't no "cut-to-fits"), full knee alignment correction so you don't catch edges on rails ($150), and a set of $220 Thermic heaters. This boot will be as customized & pimped out as Simon Dumont's boots are to his. (Thank your boys at Sun & Snow and Salomon & Thermic)

We also have a $600 setup of Line Afterbangs with Griffon bindings thanks to Line & Marker.

There's going to be a ton of other prizes all day long, and nobody is going home empty handed.

Fill in your thoughts and keep spreading the word... Thanks guys, Rob

word this sounds pretty sick...what about throwing in the entry fees for a pot for the grand winner so winner walks away with some cash in hand?? just a thought I know some riders who have sponsorships with companies that wouldn't be stoked on seeing them rocking a different companies boot/skis/bindings/etc...the skis/bindings could easily be sold but a boot custom fitted to your foot wouldn't benefit somebody else.....again sick idea..just my 2 cents....can you give a specific location for this as well?

i agree that the custom fitted boot is not the best grand prize that there is. I think new ski's would be a sick grand prize.

sounds soooo sick... i should be coming with a couple carfulls of kids from the west side of the state
i love the idea for the format as well... sounds like alot of fun

What's up guys... quick update so you're in the loop. First, on the prizes, if you don't like the boots, maybe we can do $500 gift cert for custom work on your current boots, combined with something else... maybe do that plus the skis? Maybe pool some dough for a cash prize. All good ideas. I'm here to make sure we throw a sick event that you guys can't get enough of and we blow this up huge year after year.

Prizes aside for a min. Let's talk features. Here's the line up so far:

battleship box (6' up / 6' flat / 6' down = roughly 18')

two 8' regular boxes, lined up with eachother and angle up to a point with a gap in between (total of 16')

one "dance floor"/butter box

12' steel rail

8' short steel rail

follow everything up with a kicker at the bottom

The pitch of the hill is perfect... not too steep, not too flat.

Any other requests? Let me know know ASAP and I'll see what our builder can get done.

will the steel bars be urban set up down rails?..imo 12' is pushing it but 8' is just way too small to trick..battleship sounds dope as long as there's a good tranny/kicker onto it...so many sick battleship/rainbow jibs are useless because they are setup horribly...up gap down sounds legit as well as long as the gap is clearable....not clearable where if you make it over you're conquered a large feat..but as in clearable so you can work some tech tricks in there...sounds like this rail jam is shaping up to be pretty dope

or maybe with the steel rails make it into a smooth flat down feature 8'flat 12'down..just a thought

talked with Heff$ this afternoon, and then called our park builder... we decided to tweak the plans a little... he's making it a 13' downrail similar to the one at the Capital park at Mad River Mtn... thanks for the suggestion Matt.

We also raised the battleship box up to 5' height in the center, shortened the flat and extended the down so you won't lose as much speed. 6' up, 6' flat, 8' down.

Also adding the pole jam for riders.

Final thoughts on the width of the battleship box, shoot out your opinions now... plan to have this finished by late next week. I have boarders calling for a wider box, skiers calling for a narrower box... let us know by tomorrow night!

Also met with our DJ... this guy sounds pretty sick. He'll hit the DJ tower sometime in the early afternoon and finish out the night.

Pre-registration is ready to go at sunandsnow.com/railjam

Register by Dec 30 and get a free shirt. Printable waiver is also posted on the site.

maan, how you gonna make this the day after new years eve. if i make it im gonna be fucked up from the night before haha.

heff who are you riding with? if its cool can i ride with you and toss you some green? i dont wanna ride the jeep all the way to michigan, its a gas pig and would possibly blow up on the way

with open session format we can have a lot more competitors since it's not like an elimination tournament with rounds... we'll cap it if it starts to look like it'll be crowded though.

lol... we thought about that too... that's why it's the day after new years day, not eve. you have a full day to recover.

IT WORKS!! Picked up 2 snowmakers from Snowstormsnowmaking.com... It's not resort output but it works. We're going to start coating the hill the night after xmas. Little warm up on Friday so I don't want the progress we make to melt.

Worst case scenario, we rent a huge excavator and scoop up the ice rink, but we will have snow!

Anyone that wants to crack a few beers, we'll be living in a van at the bottom of the hill the next few nights... :)

^the van under the bridge? if i come ill be down to have a few brews. maybe ill bring the sixxer of home brew that i should be receiving in the mail soon

Sick!Sounds super dope. To the guy thats setting this up mad props man. You sound real into this and super progressive. Word.We will be coming with a bunch of kids. From what i can see theres going to be a 6 6 8 battleship, 9 downrail, flatbar? what are the box/rail set up gonna be exactly?
im stoked

Rails are done... 13' flat rail with about a 3 foot drop at the end, and a 20' downrail. We're putting the finishing touches on the boxes tomorrow and having them loaded up on the trailer for the haul back to Ann Arbor.

We'll be working our asses off pelting that hill with snow every night this week, and the forecast is getting better by the day. The rain today is already starting to freeze so we should be fine.

Don't forget to start registering now at sunandsnow.com/railjam and be sure to print out the waiver/athlete profile form (they're in the same file) to bring with you to the park.

If you don't know where Vet's Park is, just head to the shop which is across the street (Westgate Mall, just off I-94 exit 172)

Address of the shop is 2471 W. Stadium Blvd. Ann Arbor, MI 48103

Hope your Christmas rocked and we'll see you all soon.

Rob

got a quick look at the rails/boxes today and they look great! Hope you guys are heading to Ann Arbor for this event. Rob is doing a great job getting this together. Hope to see you guys there!

What time does this start? Maybe i cant read, sorry if it is posted already. Can somebody give some updated details? Thank you.

Warm up session & sign up starts at noon... Comp will start about 3:00. DJ starts at 4:00 and will be scratching until 8pm.

Afterparty will be downtown until 2am for those 18 & up.

Also... some of you we're asking if you could still sign up... not a problem. We'll have a registration tent at the hill, but it would help if you guys register online so it's less "manual" registration. :)

Either way. BTW... the park is really coming together. We're blowing snow for the next 36 hours starting at 11:00 tonight. If you guys need anything, email me at rob@sunandsnow.com... It'll hit my blackberry while sleeping in the van tonight.

BIG THANKS to every one of you guys (and girls) for helping us make this event a success... It was a ton of work, and a lot of sleepless nights in a row getting ready for this, but it was totally worth every ounce of energy that went into it when we saw how much fun everyone was having.

We got some ink this morning from the Ann Arbor newspaper. Check out this link:

http://www.annarbor.com/news/ann-arbor-hosts-first-annual-rail-jam/

Again... HUGE Thanks to every one of you guys, and for those who couldn't make it out, no worries... stay tuned because we'll be doing this again next year. We already have a pile of notes we've been jotting down on things we want to change for the next one... (a mellower battleship will be in the works too)

You guys rocked it out, even in the -8 degree windchill. Same time, same place... mark it down for 2011.

Pics will be posted soon.

Rob
